My GGF Arthur Smith is said to have "kept" this "men-only" (?) pub in the business district of Liverpool but I'm not sure when. It would have been after 1911 when he was employed as a "Wine and Spirits Merchant Cellarman" according to the census. I'm told he was working there in the 1930s when my grandparents were courting.

Does anyody have any information about the pub, landlord, dates etc?

You will have to consult the Street Directories which are available on microfilm at Liverpool Record Office. Also the Public House licensing Records which are in original format.

I remember the Slaughter House pub, it was on Prescot Road just past Old Swan on the right going towards Kensington, if I remember right. It was a very small dark looking pub with a few small rooms. The Abbatoir was not far from it and the fruit market. I will ask my dad for more info when I see him he will probably have more info.

I think Bodad means the one in Fenwick Street, no.13, opposite the Corn Exchange building.
In 1909 the licensee was Thomas Walton who was also part-owner with RB Marshall.
I cannot help with 1911 or later.

The Fenwick Street one is in the 'business district'. As far as I know, it's still going, so possibly contacting the brewery might give some information.

I think the one on Prescot Road was "The Cattle Market", not the Slaughterhouse.

I've had a pint or two in both during my mispent youth.

memory must be more muddled than I thought

Sorry can't add any information, but your post brought back memories from the 1950s, the Slaughterhouse although frequented by business men was a "spit and sawdust" pub, and I do mean sawdust. It was very dark inside and you were surrounded by very large wine barrels which blocked the light from the windows. I seem to remember there being restrictions on what you could buy and also strange opening times. From the photoghraph it looks as if the place has lost all it's character.

Heli has the right place. It was described by my grandmother as a "spit and sawdust" place. There's talk of my GGF running a book there, but it's on family gossip. Ring any bells with anyone? By the way, he was born in 1890.

In 1964 plus, we all went to the Slaughterhouse to start off our pub crawl.
The walls were covered with sacks.

Welcome back. Strange how your first contribution is about pubs!

For a while in the 50s I worked in India Buildings across the road from the Slaughterhouse, which was the department boss's regular lunchtime haunt. He used to ask the troops in for a drink on his birthday, which came round at regular intervals, certainly not the usual once a year. Happy days!
