Anton Leuger, tailor, living at 16 Hope Place, in 1911

Post by colinl »

I am researching my great paternal grandfather, Anton Lueger, who appears as a 51 year old tailor living at 16 Hope Street, Liverpool about 1910-1912. Then the trail goes cold so I am wondering whether anyone has any ideas about how I might research trade directories or other such documents. I doubt he would have owned his own business. Many thanks.

Hi Colinl,
The only soundex hit on FreeBMD between 1911 and 1945 was this one. I wouldn't be too concerned about the 'strange' spelling of the surname.
Deaths Dec 1933: Lugauer, Anton - 71 - Stepney - 1c - 313.
The age is very close and you would need to check the death cert for occupation and who registered the death [a spouse or relative].

There is an Anton Lugauer in London in 1901 and he's in the tailoring business: RG13 / Piece: 301 / Folio: 105 / Page: 48.

Hi Dickiesam,

Many thanks for your inspired suggestions. The spelling of the family surname changed in the next generation when they dropped a vowel so I think you're right not to get to concerned about the spelling. I'll check the two hits out. Maybe the trail just got warm again!

Regards, Colinl.

Hi CaroleW,

Many thanks for your helpful suggestions. I had previously found Anton's marriage certificate - married in Westminster 1888 - as I knew my great-grandmother's name and age. They had a number of children in London, she went off to Dublin with the kids (where I know the family history from it being passed down the generations) and he supposedly died young. I found him in Liverpool in 1911 from checking the actual census return, and then he disappeared. I've ordered what could be his death certificate to see whether I have another branch of the family I wasn't aware of.

Regards, Colinl.

Hi
I had previously found Anton's marriage certificate - married in Westminster 1888
So the 1885 marriage I found is not his?

Marriages Dec 1888

BUTTERFIELD Rose Hannah Westminster 1a 961
FRICKE Clara Westminster 1a 961
LUEGER Anton Westminster 1a 961

I will delete my replies to avoid any confusion
