Hi,

the above marriage on Lancs BMD just says register office or registrar attended

DONLON John GREENHALGH Ruth Leigh Register Office or Registrar Attended Wigan & Leigh ROL/22/134

Are there any databases to find out of this was a church marriage or not?

The only database that I am aware of is http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/ but this covers only the Liverpool area, sorry.

There is mention of a Roman Catholic Chapel on the Leigh page of the Genuki site, but doesn't seem to name it. I think your recourse will be the certificate, unfortunately.

Hi Mary,

just found on Lancs OPC the church was Bedford Chapel 1778-1855 and is now called St Josephs, records at Lancs RO

I am just wondering if this John Donlon is the John Donlan I am looking for as neither he nor his wife Ruth seem to appear again after the wedding and my John married in 1878 at Wigan Register office. he is the right age and also born in Dunmore.

Am clutching at straws now!

If the marriage took place in a church/chapel and the Registrar attended, it would still show the name of the church/chapel on the certificate. You would also have the name of the fathers of the couple which could help confirm that it was the right person.

If you apply for the certificate - please remember to add any extra information at the foot of the form so that the Register Office will only issue the certificate, if all your known information matches. They will return your full fee if it doesn't match.

Hi Glenys,,

I am trying to work out if the John Donlon who married Ruth Greenhalgh in 1873 was the same person as John DonlAn who married Mary Wilson at Wigan Register office in 1878 so Ruth's fathers name would not be relevant. John's father was John also, the witnesses may give a clue, will send off for the cert,
