Have you all been totally, absolutely, completely certain you've found who you're looking for only to send for the certificate and have the certainty dashed? What an odd feeling.

Yep! William Lindsay (my GGranddad) has three fathers names at the last count - makes things a tad difficult! Two of the certs are definitely him.....but why the different Dad's names?

Now that's a connundrum. Do you have any theories?

My only theory is that old Willie boy told an AWFUL lot of porky pies! We know for a fact he and his missus lied on the marriage cert by saying he was 21 and she was 20.....she was only 16! That was Dec 1891. Lo and behold, by the 1901 census, William is 26 and Annie 25! I'd be better equipped to go forward with the Lindsay line if only I had definite sightings of William in 1891. The only fitting nominee had a father with the wrong name for MY William! No others in Liverpool! Got them on the 1911 in Dawson Place.
Ah....such is the lot of an ancestor hunter!

This is your post, perhaps you should give the details and see if anybody can help out.

Now, here's where it gets tricky: It worries me a little that Mary Price is now Mary S Price,
and why have two Marys? -- an E and an A -- made me wonder if this is the right family, or
has something happened like a remarriage to another Mary and two sets of offspring
combine.

I can't find the family unit in 1901. So, I'm looking for deaths for Mary price and Joseph Price.
I found a Mary in 1892 but haven't ordered a cert yet. I found a Joseph in 8th Nov 1896 and as he's
the only one I could find was convinced he was the one. But his certificate says his wife was
Ellen and his address128 Buckingham street.

The next generation is Joseph(3) above. I've ordered his birth certificate (he's actually John Joseph)
in the hope of getting back on track.

So, after that rather long winded post (I figured as much info as I could give would help), basically I'm
looking for the family in 1901 and beyond, particularly Mary and Joseph's death. Joseph is 'deceased'
on John Joseph's marriage certificate in 20 Aug 1910 to Elizabeth Kavanagh, St Anthony's. Confusingly,
1850 Joseph is also called John Joseph on this certificate.

What can i say? if you've got this far you're a star, and I really do appreciate any help that's offered...

No problem! I wouldn't be too concerned about the wife now being Mary S unless she is just plain Mary on the marriage cert. And in the 1891 Mary E is actually May E on the census page!

Hi Steve Apologies for butting in on this link...I cant help with the Prices..however I notice on your surname list you have Hinds and Haynes...I have a Thomas Hinds c1859 and wondered if there was a link

Thanks, Dickiesam, that's encouraging... May E - I wonder if that's me reading it wrong or ancestry.com transcribing incorrectly. Either way, thanks for pointing that out to me...

I can't speak for the mods, Ann, but I'm happy to see anyone 'butting in'.

I'm looking at Teresa Hinds in 1856 (though the name seems to alternate between Hynes and Hinds. She was born in Sheffield, I believe. I'm not sure off the top of my head if there's a Thomas in there anywhere. I'll check what I have and let you know...

Ann, it rather looks like your Thomas Hynes could be my Teresa Hynes's brother. There is a Thomas born 1859 in the family. Was your Thomas born in Sheffield?

Hi Steve...My Thomas was Thomas Hinds when he married my gt grandmother ? she was a widow in 1890 (( I have copy of marriage cert he was a widower and his father was also Thomas and a joiner)) then in 1891 spelled as Hynes then in 1901 Haines in all cases he was born Liverpool...however I have never been able to find him in Liverpool prior to the marriage in 1890... mmmm..what a tangled web our ancesters left us.

The stepchildren he became father to are there with him on both census's so even though the surname is spelled differently I feel as sure as I can be that he is one and the same...

My Thomas was a combmaker, and a generation back from yours, so perhaps there is no link after all. I thought perhaps your Thomas might be my James Hynes's brother (see certs below). But perhaps not...
