McDonough family

Hi all

am researching my husband's family (his maternal side) and have come across a stumbling block. I have Frances McDonugh born 1931 with siblings Joseph, James, Mary, Joan and Alma with mother Annie Graham who married James Christopher McDonough. Then from there I have Thomas McDonough born 1850 (father of James Christopher b 1886) who married and here I am stuck. On James marriage certificate it lists father as Thomas and I think I found him born 1860 but do not know who James' mother was as can not find the birth certificate. Also on the other side of the coin I have James Christopher marrying Annie Graham with father Albert Graham born 1852 Liverpool but can not find anything about him either they were married in 1886 in Liverpool

Any help that anyone can give me would be very much appreciated

regards

Hazel

I am totally confused - but then that's pretty easy to do.

You seem to have a lot of information you aren't sharing - please give the details from the marriage certificates, including occupations, addresses, father's and witness names, all details help us to look around and try to help.

If you haven't found anything about him, how do you know his birthdate? It wouldn't have been given on the marriage certificate.

If you have census entries, please quote them, including references.

Hi

I feel like I have been rapped over the knuckes so may I apologise for not getting it right on what I was asking about. I do have a marriage certificate for a Thomas McDonough marrying Annie Irvin in St Patricks Chapel Toxteth Park on 30th May 1978 and I also have a birth certificate for James Christopher McDonough born 2 November 1886 with Mother's maiden name of Annie Irvine and by the time that James married in July 1918 he states that Thomas McDonough was deceased so what I actually wanted to know was about Thomas McDonough where he was born etc I know from his marriage certificate that he states his age as 34 (married in 1878) which would make him born 1844 and his father was James McDonough. I think I was hoping that there might be somebody else following up the McDonough line who might be reading these messages on this knowledgeable site

again apologies for not getting it right and wasting people's time I will learn from this I am sure

I'm sorry you feel that way, all we have done is ask questions to attempt to clarify some facts which may enable us to identify the family.
please give the details from the marriage certificates, including occupations, addresses, father's and witness names, all details help us to look around and try to help.
so without this information we are guessing at answers.

My best guess now can only be

1891 census
127 Grafton Street, Toxteth Park, Lancashire
Ann Macdonough Head Wid 37 Charwoman Newry Ireland
Joseph son 11 Scholar Liverpool Lancashire
James son 4 Scholar " "
RG12; Piece: 2926; Folio 73; Page 42

The birth of Joseph would coincide with a marriage in 1878 in Toxteth Park.

I believe on the marriage certificate, Thomas may have given his occupation. It may also be stated on the birth certificate of James.

The 1881 census allows you to do an occupation search and this may well help you find the family then.

Hello Hazel,
I am fairly sure this is young Thomas in the 1851. If you go to the same family in 1861 you will see Thomas is an apprentice tin man/smith, his trade in 1881.

1851:
MCDONOUGH, James - Head - 41 - 1810 - Labourer - Co Westmeath, Ireland.
MCDONOUGH, Bridget - Wife - 39 - 1812 - Co Westmeath, Ireland.
MCDONOUGH, James - Son - Unm - 18 - 1833 - Apprentice Fitter & Turner - Toxteth Park, Lancashire.
MCDONOUGH, Thomas - Son - 7 - 1844 - Toxteth Park, Lancashire.
MCDONOUGH, Mary - Dtr - 5 - 1846 - Toxteth Park, Lancashire.
MCDONOUGH, Francis - Son - 2 - 1849 - Toxteth Park, Lancashire.

Address: 23, Court No 6, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
RG number: HO107 - Piece: 2187 - Folio: 18 - Page: 29.

County Westmeath is west of Dublin with Athlone as it's main town.

Have you seen this birth and checked it out?
Births Sep 1842: McDonaugh, Thomas - W Derby - 20 - 869.

Note that while the censuses say he was born in Toxteth, registrations under 'Toxteth' did not begin until 1881.
