Am looking for William (Stewart) Hall. The Stewart is sometimes mentioned but not always. Lived on Conway St, Seaforth in 1905. Need to know his date of birth and likely origins. He is listed variously as "diver", "labourer", "merchant seaman" and "submarine diver". Only have a name. Could possibly have come from Scotland and had several brothers. His wife was listed as Esther Annie but never found marriage certificate. Had at least three children. Allegedly died in 1914. Searched in vain for this information for a long time. He was my great grandad and our family would love to know who he was.
Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

Where was she listed with this name? If it was on a child's birth certificate or his marriage certificate then you would know her surname.
Your way ahead is to obtain your grandfather's birth certificate which would give you their address at that date but more importantly Esther's maiden name and this will enable you to search for their marriage.
Have you looked for them in the 1911 census? Collect your facts together,
Had at least three children
you need names and birthdates, especially if any of them were born before the 1911 census was taken and this will give you a good start.

Thank you for your responses especially the look ups for marriages. Esther was named Ward before marriage and we have looked for years for a wedding to no avail. They are not together in 1911 and she is claiming to be a widow even though she then gives his name as the father of two children in 1912 and 1914. It has always been a bit of a puzzle and until very recently when we discovered the birth and death of a child in 1904/05 we did not believe any of the information we had. We just have no idea of his identity.
May I just say this website is an absolute treasure trove and you are all obviously passionate about your own and other peoples' searches. Brilliant

Additionally please give the details from the certificate you got her name from.
