Jobs on the Dock in Liverpool in 1900

What is a Carter???
My great grand father was a worker on the docks in Liverpool.
MY great grandfather John Duncan Caldwell Family was from Scotland and his wife Margaret Quine-Caldwell family was from isle of man.Great Grand Father John i believe worked at the docks i don't know if he was a docker or carter but i do know my grandfather used to go and hold the heads of the cart horses while they were being loaded i cant swear to it but i think my great grandfather was in an accident and either was trampled by a horse or ran over by one of the carts when a runaway horse fled the dock area.My grand father Alexander Caldwell was born in 1902 had two brothers John Duncan Caldwell the oldest and William the youngest.There mother remarried again and had a daughter Margaret she was about 21 when My Aunt first met her and her father .My grandfather was in the Army and travel alot before retiring to Liverpool.
So my question is there some info i can get on the accident that might have killed my Great grandfather John Duncan.I don't know when the accident happen we think that my Great grandmother remarried after 1914.
Is there something on Workers who worked the Liverpool Dock. John Duncan Caldwell father was James Caldwell he listed as a Boiler Maker in 1901 census what is that???
Also John was listed on the 1901 census as ships scaling labor when he was 23yrs old.What is that???

Any info on Liverpool Dock Workers and there jobs During 1800-1900 .

I would like to know more about what my Great Grandfather work life was like.
My Aunt still lives in Liverpool and my mum is in Sunny Florida with me.

I believe 'Ship scaling' was a process where the ship's hull was scraped clean of marine growths like barnacles etc, scaly old paint and rust etc, prior to repainting. A very dirty, labour intensive job back then.

Just to add about John D R(Ritchie) from previous post, he was born in Birkenhead and perhaps not related at all, just happened to be in W Dby.
