My Grandfather was Alexander Caldwell born 12-8-1902 in Everton Liverpool.Parents were John Duncan Caldwell age 23yrs and Margaret Jane Quine-Caldwell age 21yrs.We found the 1901 Census that had my GreatGreat-Grandfater-James Caldwell who was 59yrs old in 1901.Beside my GreatGreatgrandfather and his son and wife there was the oldest son John Duncan Caldwell who was 1yr old.My grandfather was born a year after the 1901 census. My grandfather was born at 99 Elias Street in Everton Liverpool.Since John Duncan was 23 in 1901 he was born around 1878 depending on the month the census was taken.Margaret Jane Quine-Caldwell was 21 in 1901 she was born around 1880 depending on when the census was taken.Heard that the Caldwells and the Quine were from Isle of Man but have not found any proof.Did find out that Margaret Jane Quine-Caldwell remarried after husband died but don't know when John Duncan Sr died. Her new married name was Hallmark and had a daughter named Margaret. They lived at 81 Prince Edwin St.Liverpool.
John Duncan the son was a AIR RAID WARREN during the war and died May4th 1941,wife name was Beatrice Caldwell and lived at 9 Attwood Street Liverpool in 1941.
So if any one can please help me with the Caldwell and Quine family. My mother and her oldest sister Pearl would be happy to know more about there fathers family. If some one can give me a way to find more Census with maybe James and his wife since i don't know what her name is. Also Margaret Parents have no clue who they are.If any one can help send me in the right direction it would help me alot.
Thanks for your time.

1871 boarding with James and Bridget Cain and their children at 39 House 7 Court, Hornby Street, St Martin, Liverpool
All born Liverpool
James Caldwell 28 Labourer in Foundry
Eliza 26
Eliza 7
James 4
Isabella 1
RG10; Piece: 3759; Folio: 66; Page: 64
A possible marriage is
James Caldwell to Elizabeth Willetts Liverpool, St. Peter 1862 (GRO Ref Liverpool 8b 275).
To confirm this you will need the birth certificate of one of the children. Maybe the easiest to confirm would be Alexander Caldwell, Q2 1877 Liverpool 8b 12, the only birth for John Duncan appears to be a little out for date ... Q4 1872 Liverpool 8b 21.
To proceed with the Quine family you will need the marriage certificate that Katie gave you the details of above, to discover her father's name and occupation. Witness names might also be useful.

Thanks Tina, I hope she's pleased. Could possibly take things further with speculation, but as you know we'd prefer to work from facts, so await the confirmation from certificates.
Thanks

I want to thank all of you for answering so quickly. I can't wait to share this with my Aunt Pearl in Liverpool and my mum in Florida. They will be excited to know this info unfortunately there parents didn't believe in sharing there family history.I have had a time trying to find my grandfathers family. My grandmother was from France and the Channel Islands in Guernsey and Jersey and i am still trying to piece that family together.
Thanks again ..
If you can think of anything else.Still have to try a trace the Quine family...
Great work all of you

I have a feeling the Caldwells may have been from Scotland, although there are two of similar age in Liverpool and the marriage certificate is essential to discover his father's name and occupation.
As advised, the Quines can't be continued without further information from certificates.

Quine is definitely a Manx name and Caldwells also appear on the Isle Of Man. Here are some IOM burial lists featuring both names:-

My mom told me a story this morning that makes sense.
It seem my Grandfather ran away from home and lied about his age and went into the Army and when his mother found out he was in the army and went to bring him home he was old enough to be in the Army so he stayed and made a career out of the Army and was station in Jersey where he met my grandmother. All we can figure is he didn't like the fact that his mother remarried and had another family. So when my grandfather finally retired from the Army and moved his family back to Liverpool he wasn't that close to his family my mum mentions that they hardly knew his family. My Aunt still lives in Liverpool and my mum lives in Florida.I have kept them up to date on what your finding have been.
Thanks again for your hard work on finding info...

I talked to my mum and Aunt Pearl and they say that Caldwell were from Scotland and Quine from Isle of Man.Don't know when Margaret Quine family came to Liverpool.Still trying to pry info out of my family.
Did find out that Margaret Quine-Caldwell had a Cart and sold Veggie from it on a Corner and then got a Stall in we think St.John's Market. Her sons would pick up bruised veggies for there dinner.I ask my mum do you mean like in My Fair Lady and she said yes Margaret wore a Shawl and Black Dress with Button Boots. Her husband John Duncan Caldwell on the census was a Carter and worked the docks and that is where we believed there was a accident with the horses and he died from being trampled by a run away horse.Still trying to find info to back that up.We believe it was in March of 1914 do anyone know how i can find out if there was anything written up in the newspaper.

The information you now give seems to support what I said above, however you
have to follow things through with the certificates otherwise the parents can't be confirmed. Especially with the two Caldwells, there are two of the same name and similar age, but their fathers have different names and occupations, so the marriage certificate is essential to know which of them is yours, however, both families appear to have come from Scotland.
Your belief that John D Caldwell died in March 1914 would support the death I found in the GRO index, however in view of the print being so unclear I feel it would be better for you to order the certificate from the
Liverpool Register Office You could then give them some information and if the entry is incorrect they may not charge you.
I feel it is essential that you confirm this is the correct death before trying to research newspapers, which can't be done online at this date, but would be held at the Liverpool Record Office. The certificate may state whether or not there was a Coroner's Inquest held.

My Atkinson people were carters I know of a couple of anecdotes about them. There's one story in the family about my great grandmother being bitten by a horse. The other is about my Great Grandfather leaving his cart on the Dock Road to go to join the army when the first world war started.
Going back to the Quines in the Isle Of Man I noticed my Great, Great Grandfather Thomas Mylchreest was staying with a Quine family and their farm workers on the 1851 Census. He is staying at Ballakilley, Malew, the head and mother of the family were:-
John Quine, 55, 1796, Farmer of 60 Acres, b. Malew
Ann Quine, 40, 1811, b. Malew
Thomas is listed as follows:-
Thomas Mylchreest, Visitor, 15, 1836, Farm Servant, b. Malew

Although Caldwell is a name quite common in Scotland, don't forget that there have been Caldwells in Huyton/Knowsley/Kirkby since abt 1608 when George Caldwell moved to Huyton from Grappenhall in Cheshire
It seems that the Caldwells in St Chad's, Kirkby PRs are descended from him and many migrated into Liverpool
