Children's Rest, Greenbank Lane

Post by erika »

Hi All

I was wondering if there would be records for Children's Rest, Greenbank Lane, Toxteth Park at LRO.

I have a death cert for 1921 with this address on.
I know the child was an orphan, but wondered if finding any records would have details of her siblings on it, as they had been put in an orphange after their father was killed in WW! and their mother died shortly afterwards.

Was there an orphanage nearby to Greenbank Lane?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

There was a prep school for boys in Greenbank Lane, which closed in 1912. It is possible that the building was later used as the Children's Rest, but there is nothing for that in the online catalogue for Liverpool RO.
The building is now in use again, but for a diffent purpose - a sports college for the disabled.
There are probably people here who know more about orphanages etc.

Hi everyone
I can remember my Mum referring to it as the Home for crippled children.
She worked there I think but don't know when, before WW2 perhaps.
It also took in sickly kiddies as some malnourished ones around Wavertree had been in there.
I don't think it was an orphanage as such.
We used to go a lot to Greenbank Lake & can remember her pointing out Mr Rathbones grand house.
Interesting post.

:D

The Rathbones owned the whole estate of Greenbank, so it might have something to do with them.

Hi All

Thanks for your interest in this post.

My gt uncle's daughter was a "sickly" child and it was in Children's Rest that she died in 1921.
The rumour I'd recently heard about her death was that she had been placed in the home as she was unwell and that her siblings were in an orphange. She had supposedly gone out one night to look for them and was found in a doorway the next morning dead.
However on her death cert it doesn't mention anything like that. She died from Aortic regurgitation and acute rheumatism aged 13. There was no pm carried out.

I was just wondering if records were kept for this home and were kept at LRO. Also if there was an orphange close by that she may have been looking for if there may have been some truth in the rumour!

Cheers

Hi again Erika :D
It looks like she had suffered from rheumatic fever, so common back then & still years later in the 30s/40s.
Those who survived suffer from problems with heart valves.
There was an orphange in Toxteth Park.
In her minds eye the walk wouldn't have been too long back then, children walked for miles and thought nothing of it.
My suggestion is you list all the names you have.
That's only my suggestion, if we are to go further with this.
Good luck

Hi My Aunty informed me that my Great Uncle ( John Jones ) was in a childrens home in the Greenbank area during 1900-1906 ( she thinks he was 6-7 years old) .
I know he was born in 1899 .

Would anyone be able to look at any records for him there for me ?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As advised above I don't believe it has been established whether there are any surviving records, or indeed if there are where they are kept.

You might find it of interest to read about the History of Greenbank Building, as given in the link http://www.greenbank-project.org.uk/ind ... us/history

You are lucky that as you live in Merseyside, you could visit the Record Office which is on the 4th floor, William Brown Street Library, if there are any records at all they should be kept there, although again as advised in the thread above these don't appear to be listed in the Online Catalogue however, please check again to be sure.

If you have any success, please keep us informed.
