My Gt grandfather is Peter Lee and I am stuck as to how to establish where he was born and access a certificate. I have the following information;
Peter Lee aged 23 Porter, Married Ann Jane Tidyman aged 20 on 19 Apr 1887 at St Mary's Kirkdale attended by James Taylor and Ellen Tidyman - his father is listed as James - deceased.
Subsequent census - 1891, 1901 & 1911 have him listed as born in 1864 in Liverpool and he is a Porter or Warehouse Porter.

There are no Peter Lees listed as being born in 1864 in Liverpool in fact there is only one for that era that I have found and that is in 1866 and it is not him (parents William and Margaret and he married a Matilda Roberts).

1871 census has a Peter Lee aged 7 born Liverpool others on the record are
LEE Mary Female Head Widow aged 35 Market woman born Liverpool
LEE Mary A daughter aged 12 born Liverpool
LEE Ellen aged 10 born Liverpool
The address is 17 Clifford Street [RG 10; Piece 3788; Folio 63 Page 7

1881 Census has at 16 Clifford Street

LEE Ellen Head 43 Widow Fruit saleswoman born Liverpool
LEE Peter son male aged 19 Grocers Porter born Liverpool
[RG 11; Piece 3628; Folio 134; Page 18]

I'm assuming that the name of the mother in one of the 2 Census is an error although which one it is I don't know. Any suggestions as to where i might proceed to from here?

Regards from slightly chilly Valentine (max 20 degrees C)

There is a birth registration for a Peter Lahey March quarter 1863 Liverpool 8b 85

I put the name in the family search and it matched with Lee. Needs to be ruled out

Thanks Katie. I will add it to the list of Peter Lees born in Lancashire around that period.

Hiya Sandy....on www.lan-opc.org.uk

it would appear though LIVING in Orrell, Liverpool, the child was babtised in Upholland...probably the mother or fathers Parish Church..
so was he BORN IN ORRELL ????

Peter Lee b 8th July 1865
babtised 1 April 1866 St Thomas The Martyr, Upholland , Lancashire
father James Lee occ Collier
mother Sarah
ABODE ORRELL (LIVERPOOL)

if you think this is a possible , I would think you need to try and find a babtism or marriage of James /Sarah at St Thomas The Martyr , Upholland

Hi Allan
I can't see a connection to Peter born in Orrell living in Upholland.
Way out Wigan way.

Sandy's family all born Lpool.

ABODE ORRELL (LIVERPOOL)
I think Allan may be confused between Orrell near Wigan, which this entry seems to refer to, and Orrell near Aintree, pity though as it would have been a nice find.

Thanks folks I have been looking for a while and have been slowly eliminating various Peters found in Lancashire through their father or occupations or spouse as they progress through the census 71 & 81. Since he was a Porter for all of his working life I feel that the Clifford Street Peter is most likely the one so I am looking for a Peter Lee with a father James and a mother either Mary or Ellen. Which census collector made the error? The 1871 census had a sister Ellen and a sister Mary A.

I have not closed off others including the Peter Lahey found by Katie - just a slow process cross checking.

All your efforts much appreciated.
