Manchester Council have a searchable burials site. When looking for the graves of some ancestors I found that my G Grandad, Walter Frankesh Roseby (whose Dad had been to prison and had various aliases as I found out thanks to help on the site) is shown on the burial record from 1929 as Walter Frankesh Roxby.
I then looked at the marriage records. For April May Jun 1905 there are 2 entries with the same record and on the same page as Lily Goodwill (who he married) Walter Frankish Roseby and Walter Frankish Roxby.
These must be the same people.
Can anyone help me understand why the marriage is recorded twice in 2 names? I realise it may be a mistake but then cant work out why his burial record is for Roxby too!

I would suggest that as he is listed twice in the marriage registers either there was some discrepancies with how he wrote his name or that he said my name is Roseby but I use Roxby or something similar. You will need to buy the marriage certificate to find out definitely or look at the entry in the church register if you know the church.

As for the burial the cemetery will list the name they were given and spell it as it was spelt to them. Again I would suggest you need the death certificate to find out which name he was using.

The actual GRO Index page shows both names for the same entry.. Prestwich - 8d - 595. As Hilary says, I'd surmise the Registrar understood from the groom that he used either/or surname and made two entries in the register.

Interesting if you got two separate marriage certs..

I have the marriage cert for Walter Frankish Roseby. Looking at it I can see that the Roseby possibly looks like Roxby. Do you think if i sent for the Roxby marriage cert I would just get the same one again?
Do you think the person compiling the burial register may have just looked at the death cert (which I assume would be handwritten) and thought it said Roxby?

If the references for the marriages are the same you will get the same certificate as you already have. best would be to check the church register. The same would apply for the death if they have the same numbers it's the same certificate.
