Re the impending closure of the LRO as from the 31st of May..

Found this interesting comment on another forum:
When speaking with the LRO staff manning their stand at the recent local history exhibition at St Georges Hall they assured me that on closure all microfilm records and readers were to be moved to a very convenient location in Liverpool City Centre, where they would be readily accessible on a walk in basis, WITHOUT APPOINTMENT. They stated that the only records to be transferred to a secure warehouse would be those that are currently accessible only through the Search Room but even these would generally be accessible by prior appointment. They told me that an announcement about the new arrangements and exact locations would be made about 4 weeks before closure.

Yes, it's getting close and maybe even for longer than originally anticipated. I know there are plans for keeping records as available as possible, but I don't think they will all fit in one central location.

Await hearing more news.

I had an e-mail from Ruth Hobbins from Liverpool RO a few weeks ago, this is her reply.

The detail of what will happen when we close will be made available in due course, probably in April, but final details are still under negotiation. Essentially, the Record Office microfilms and the Probate Indexes will be available in a building in the centre of Liverpool as soon as possible after our closure at the end of May but we do expect it will take a few weeks to get things set up and to train staff. The remainder of our collections will be held elsewhere and we will have a public service point to provide access but it will be by appointment only and we will need advance notice of the material you wish to see.



More details will be available on the website once they become available. I am sorry that I can’t be more specific at this time, but as the majority of our family history material is on film, it shouldn’t cause too many problems.
