St Philip's, Liverpool, 1870 between Benjamin Willcox & Amelia Dorothy Pilkington. Married in 1st Qtr, Cert No 272.

I am particularly interested in confirming the parents of these two lovebirds!

Not the look-up you are requesting but given that there is only one birth between 1845 and 1850 that matches the name:
Births Dec 1848: PILKINGTON, Amelia Dorothy - Liverpool - 20 - 320.......

I am fairly sure this is her in 1851:
PILKINGTON, Thomas - Head - 34 - 1817 - Warehouse Man - Ormskirk, Lancashire.
PILKINGTON, Elizabeth - Wife - 32 - 1819 - Childwall, Lancashire.
PILKINGTON, Amelia Dorathy - Dtr - 2 - 1849 - Toxteth Park, Lancashire.
Address: 16 Fairview Place, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
RG number: HO107 Piece: 2188 Folio: 418 Page: 18

If her age on the marriage cert matches the birth year or very close to it, I'd say that it is she.

Thanks for the reply. You do have the right Amelia on the 1851 census. It was actually Benjamin's parents I wanted to confirm - sorry, should have said!

I have them as John Willcox & Mary Tizzard Tillett from Almondsbury, Bristol but as I cannot find a birth or death listing for this elusive ancestor I thought I would make doubly sure by getting some further details from the marriage cert as to the father at least.

I managed to get the parentage from his brother John Henry Bennett Willcox's birth certificate.

Being a master mariner, I think Benjamin must have died at sea sometime between 1872-1877 (as his wife Amelia Dorothy Pilkington remarries in 1877).

Hi Dickiesam,

Yes this is my Benjamin - at least that's what I'm hoping! As noted Benjamin is a sailor, and in fact is later noted as a Master Mariner, and heads for Liverpool to marry Amelia in 1870.

My problem is there is no record of his birth in or around Almondsbury, Bristol. His brother, John Henry Bennett Willcox had his birth listed under Thornbury, Avon. The nearest I can get is a listing for a Benjamin born in Somerset, which isn't too many miles away I know but I have a feeling that Benjamin may only be part of his name as his brother has 3 christian names and he was listed on most of the census just by one of his christian names.

I have done a search for any Willcox child born 1839/40 but nothing is coming up apart from the one in Axbridge, Somerset which certainly fits the time frame. If I don't get anywhere with the marriage cert I will have to order this birth cert listed in Somerset and see what comes up.

The 1861 census you detailed - Mary Willcox is his mother with Henry Willcox being his brother (John Henry Bennett Willcox). I just think it a bit strange that parents would give one child 3 christian names and their only other child 1 christian name. Or am I reading too much into this? I think all this sun has gone to my head!

Thanks - Yes, this is the same family in 1851. Hester Pillett is actually Hester TILLETT as she is Mary Willcox's (nee Tillett) sister.

Thanks Gray, yes this is the same family in 1841. However it is the birth details of Benjamin that I cannot find.

According to the 1841,51 and 61 census he was born in Almondsbury, Bristol about 1839/40. However there are no records of this.

I have his brother, John Henry Bennett Willcox, birth certificate and he was born in Almondsbury in 1837. I know the family didn't move from Almondsbury during this time so am wondering if he slipped through the net!

Have you looked at the actual parish registers for Almondsbury? If not I would suggest these should be your next move. At the time you are looking it is just at the beginning of Civil registration and he may not have been registered.

To do this you have a few options

Hire someone to look at the registers in the local archive office (Bristol Gloucestershire?)

Check if anyone has produced a CD of the transcripts for the parish and purchase this

Get your nearest LDS centre to order in a copy of the relevant film, there is a charge for this, and then go to the centre and go through it.

Thanks Dickiesam. It's strange as I saw those messages on rootschat a couple of days ago and left a message myself.

I didn't know there was a LDS Centre in Cork, but have just found the address - Sarsfield Road, Wilton and it looks like its open all day Monday and Tuesday evening. I will give them a ring and see if they can order in the film I need.
