marriage on ship??

My hubby has an ancester who emigrated from Liverpool to USA in 1852 ((could be 1857 master of the ship The Henry Clay's writing a little flamboyant)) he appears to be single however on the 1860 USA census (( which Susan very kindly found for me)) he is married to an English woman with 3 children. I know he was single from the 1851 census in Darlington....soooo I'm wondering if ((the old romantic that I am

)) perhaps they fell in love on board and the master Captain George Hill married them. If he did..would there be any records out there that may have details.
Here are the names...Cuthbert Smailes b 1826 Durham Blacksmith
Ellen no surname b 1827 England
Have checked FBMD and cannot find a marriage for Cuthbert
Thanks in anticipation...

Hello Ann,
If the was a marriage at sea it would not be included in FreeBMD. However, I checked for marriages at sea from 1854 to 1860 without success. Those were the only years I could find. Also checked Consular marriages 1852 to 1860 without success as well.
Sorry!

Hi Many thanks for looking it was a shot in the dark...I have realised the first child Hannah was born 1854 so possibly they met and married in Ohio which is where I find them on the 1860 USA census... I wonder do they keep marriage records.??
The search goes on...........and on..........

Hello Ann,
If you have the county where you found the Smailes' family in Ohio 1860, you might find their marriage here:

Hi Sue ...I think you may be right as Ellen named her first child Hannah maybe after her mother?? I found the death of one of her sons namely John he died Washington 1914 naming his parents as Cuthbert and Ellin..there was also a mention of a military pension but unable to open that one.
