Help proving my theory

Hi All,

Your expertise needed after 10 years looking. Please.

My x3 g.mother Mary Eaton born c 1808 -1810 according to the census.
I have her listed on the census 1841-1861 (died bef 1871)

Mary married Nathan Fairhurst 12/8/1827 St. Nicholas.
Nathan WAS born 1810, this would make him 17 at marriage.

I have a copy of the marriage cert from the LRO no fathers name listed.
Neither are listed as minors. Listed as from the Parish.

There are 3 possiblities on the IGI. One on the OPC.

The ONE that I believe was my Mary Eaton from the OPC

baptized 16/4/1806 St Nicholas
daughter of John Eaton and Margaret(formerly Parkinson)his wife
born: 23/2/1806
abode: moorfields
occ: butcher
Register bapt: 1806 pg.18 entry 8

Reasoning behind my theory, apart from a strong instinct.

Nathan & Mary had four children that I know of: naming pattern seems to fit.

Mary 1828 named after Mary Birtles/Bertles, Nathans' mother
John 1835 - 1836
Sarah - 1839 married Wiliam Wilcockson Studdart
James c 1847 married Mary Ann Davies (named after James Fairhurst, Nathans' father
Margaret - 1850

The occupation of butcher runs in the family in earlier generations, both Nathans' brothers were. Also his step father James Gratrix (listed 1825 St John's Market)

They all lived in the area of Cheapside/Dale Str; Crosshall Str, Stanley Str; Peters Str; etc.

How do I prove it??

have you located any of the graves yet? headstones can yield a wealth of info as can the parish records..notations in the margins etc.

Thanks NM for your reply.

I have not been able to find many graves yet for my family.

The ones I have found were buried in the 'Low Hill' (Necropolis) cemetery, these I found in the Non Conformist registers.

Sadly, this cemetery was turned into a park in the early 1900's(So I have been told) so no headstones left?

Will just keep looking, may get lucky one day.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

There are MI inscriptions for the Necropolis on Microfilm at the Record Office. He could also be recorded on Gibsons Epitaphs available to purchase from the on line publications sales

Hi Col,

Good thinking!!!

Will look into Mary being a witness, I may be lucky.

I am not sure about John And Margaret 1841 as I no longer have Ancestry so not able to look.

When I had Ancestry I found Nathan and Mary in Tottenham London 1841. In a hotel, only has their daughter Sarah with them.
Their surname was mistranscribed, I have corrected it on Anc. If my memory serves me right I think it was transcribed as Farrhnut

Many thanks for your thoughts

There would appear to be two John and Margaret Eatons in Liverpool in the 1841 census

The first couple living Wood Street, St Thomas, Liverpool, both 57 years old and he is a labourer, both NOT born in county. HO107; Piece 562; Book: 8; Civil Parish: Liverpool; County: Lancashire; Enumeration District: 47; Folio: 32; Page: 12

The other is more interesting

Gibraltar Street, Howard Street, Liverpool
James Gill 30 Mariner Y
Jane Gill 25 Y
/
Mary Crane 55 Laundress Y
Elizabeth Fairhurst 25 Laundress Y
Alice Fairhurst 20 Dressmaker Y
//
John Eaton 45 Cart Owner Y
Margaret Eaton 45 Y
William Eaton 20 Carter Y
William Roberts 15 Carter Y
HO107; Piece 557; Book: 15; Civil Parish: Liverpool; County: Lancashire; Enumeration District: 20; Folio: 26; Page: 44

Thanks Mary for this look up.

As you say it does look VERY interesting.

I will have a ferret about this afternoon and see what I can find.

I know it sounds daft but I always get a 'feeling' when things seem 'Right'

I am sure we all do..instinct, for our own I guess.

Once again, many thanks.

Hi Gray

If John & Margaret were your Mary's folks..children they had were Mary st Nics 1806.. John 1808 St Nics .. Margaret 1813 St Pauls.. there is also a William 1823 St Pauls.. and a Jane 1828 St Pauls.
Not sure if they all belong to the same couple though..

I saw the John Eaton who was a Butcher at St Johns market 1824.. then in 1827 theres a Sarah Eaton Butcher at St Johns Market..she has to be connected to John.

ALSO your Mary names her daughter Sarah..

I also wonder why Nathan & Mary went to Middlesex.. was he a Tailor or a Sailor haaaaaaa the old writting as usual on the census..

It could be her folks were from Middlesex.

The Elizabeth Fairhurst & Alice were daughters of a George & Alice Fairhurst..George was a Plasterer..

Hiya

Spanner in the works

As there was a Richard Eaton also a Butcher with with Sarah..they were having children between 1810-1820's abode Trueman St.

She could be the Sarah who carries on her husbands buisness..but i can't say for certain..perhaps John & Richard were brothers...both being Butchers..

Hi Col,

Nathan was a tailor.

Mary says on 1851/1861 she was born L.pool

Just a possibility for Nathan and Mary being in London 1841

Nathan had a cousin a James Fairhurst born 1817 L.pool(father Nathan/Nathian Fairhurst mother Alice Rigby)

James 1817 was a bank note engraver, he was living in London 1841.. I wondered if he was visiting him or possibly there was a chance of work?

I have been trying to tie this mornings info together..

From the 1841 census that Mary found for me

There was a James Gill and Jane listed with John Eaton and Margaret.

She was a Jane Fairhurst, married James Gill 1839 St Luke

Presumably she was the daughter of Mary Crane, who has 2 other girls listed under Fairhurst.. Elizabeth and Alice
Has Mary re married a unknown Crane (cannot find a marr between Crane & Mary Fairhurst)

I am just trying to piece things together.

Thanks for your help, really appreciated

Hi Col,

Just a thought, more cats & pigeons

There is another George Fairhurst. (mother Mary) could this be Mary Crane(nee Fairhurst nee Rimmer) on the 1841

Baptisms: 23 Apr 1820 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
George Fairhurst - Child of William Fairhurst & Mary
Abode: Midgehall St
Occupation: Plasterer
Baptised by: P. Bulmer Curate

This opens another 'can of worms' I have been trying for years to connect William Fairhurst to the family. I believe him to be my x4 g.fathers brother/cousin.. have never been able to prove. Many of them were plasterers...eek!!!

Hi Gray

according to the 1851

5 Beau St

Jane Gill 41 widower Mangler b Lpool
Dau Elizbateh age 8
Dau Ann age 4
AUNT MARY CAINE AGE 30 B LPOOL
Sister Elizabeth Fairhurst age 30 b Lpool

Lodger William Roberts age 24 b Lpool
Jane Roberts age 27

Lodger James Wilson age 40 b Yorkshire
J F Wilson age 8 b Lpool

So Mary was a Caine..

How many siblings did your Nathan Have ?

Also still at Gilbralter St Court 4

John Eaton age 56 b Lpool Carter 1795
Margaret Eaton age 56 b Kirkham 1795

They cant be Marys folks they would have been too young to have her 1806.

I think we should rule this lot out..just coinsidence a Fairhurst family wee next door and as i say THis John & Margaret would be too young to have a baby in 1806.

Problem we have is there is only one baptism for a Mary Eaton on the IGI..c 1806 in Lpool..

Has anyone checked the BIVRI'S for another...??

Hi Col,

Went to bed early, brain was scrambled. I was going round in circles, not really coming up with anything.. I will have to get Ancestry again I think easier for cross reference.

Yes, that John and Margaret are too young.

Nathan only had two siblings that I know of.

Joseph Fairhurst 1811 married Margaret Williams 22/9/1834 St Peter(he was also a butcher) He lives 1851 next door to his mother Mary Birtles (she is now Mrs Gratrix sweetmeats dealer) James Fairhurst her 1st hubby was a mariner and died c 1814

John Fairhurst 1808 married sarah Bibby 25/10/1836 St Peter(went to Australia c1840) John was a butcher on the OPC but says painter on his travel docs.

No I have not had anyone look for Mary in the BIVRI

Thanks for your time,

Grayx
