If you have all the relevant information you can order the certificates from the General Records Office (GRO) just as easily as from the local office.
Know what you mean about brick walls - I'm sure everyone's got them!

Hi Barbara
The births for Liverpool including a lot of West Derby are still in the process of being checked before entry onto the Lancs BMD site.
The deaths have not even started being checked but as a Volunteer we are doing our best to get as many entries done as we can. Then they have to be checked again for the errors that we have found before they go onto Lancs BMD.
There is only room for 3 volunteers at a time at the Register office although they are now sorting out the days and times when Volunteers attend, so hopefully we may find there is space for some new Volunteers to assist in the checking at times that are vacant.
In the meantime if you have the quarter and the year, you will be able to get the certificates at the GRO for the same price. The thing about the local Register office is that they do not charge you if it is the wrong one, when you have given other details to check, like parents names.

Hello Cynb19,
If you have all the info from FreeBMD.. qtr - year - volume and page, order the certs from here and you should have them in about 7 days.
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp
The certs cost £7 each so if you know any other details such as parents' names, mother's maiden name etc, for a birth cert, use the Reference Checking facility. If the reference checks you provide don't match the index, the GRO will only charge you £4 for the search instead of the full £7 for a wrong cert.
