Does anyone have a baptism for a Barbara Jane RUTLIDGE born about 1844? Father was Nathaniel.
Barbara married James Short about 1859 and soon after emigrated to Australia.

Can you give us any more information? her age on her marriage certificate, address status etc.

What details do you have for her and her father on the 1851 census?

You should be able to get a birth certificate for her at that date, civil registration began in 1837, but I don't see an entry for her.

Are you sure about that year of birth? It would mean Barbara was about 15 when she married! Where was she born, and where and when did the marriage take place? Haven't found it yet in FreeBMD.

Found this though: Birth Dec 1844 - ROUTLEDGE, Barbara - Sunderland - 24 - 294.
Followed by this: Death Mar 1847 - Routledge, Barbara - Sunderland - 24 - 246.
Without the age at death one can't be sure it is the same person. The 1851 census only shows 2 Barbaras with a surname a near match for Rutlidge. One was born abt 1824 and the other abt 1828. The older one is already married.

Thanks Guys for your replies and efforts to find the elusive Barabara. I have already checked all official English records as you did and could find no mention of her. Hence my post on here.

Sorry to pursue the points, especially as you say you have already searched official English records, but would you explain the reasoning behind:
a) the assumption of abt 1844 as a YoB;
b) the assumption of abt 1859 as the year of marriage.
c) the assumption that Barbara was 'English'.

With regard to a), I can understand a birth slipping through the civil registration system. But with the marriage, if it isn't in the GRO index then it almost certainly didn't happen in England or Wales. It would be a many million to one chance that both events were omitted from the registers and the indexes. Add to that the fact she appears to be missing from the 1851 census as well.......

A little more background information might enable those of us with interests outside England and Wales to search elsewhere, in the Isle of Man and Scotland for instance.

You know her father is Nathaniel, please let us know how you've come across this info also her marriage to James.
