Hi guys would like some advice again please. I am still looking for my great grandmothers family the Clarkes. My great grandmother was called Henrietta Clarke from Liverpool, on her marriage certificate she was living at Lombard Street Liverpool in 1903, I think she was living with her witness Theresa Hickey. Her father is listed as Joseph James Clarke (Joiner) alive in 1903. We know she used to speak of a shop they had, Hinton Street is a possibility but I cannot find her or her mother or any census records living with her father either. She was married in Norwood Chapel, Liverpool to Joseph Henry Trimble and was born around 1878 I have applied for various birth certificates and each one her father is not Joseph Clarke. I have tried looking in the census records for Joseph or James but pre her 1903 I cannot find anything about her. Could anyone give me any ideas, shop keeper directorys etc. Could the fathers name be wrong on the certificate. Any help or pointers would be great.

Do you have the 1911 census for Henrietta and her husband? If you do what is given as her place of birth and how old is she? If you haven't got this I think you should get it as at the moment you do not appear to have definite proof of her place of birth.

At around about the 1910/1912 mark Henrietta is 34, Joseph is 35 and Elsie 6, all born Liverpool and living in the West Derby area.

Hi MaryA, yes I do have the 1911 census and Henrietta, Joseph and Elsie are the family. On the 1911 census it does confirm she was born in Liverpool, but I can't find her, I can't even get her birth certificate as I have no proof of her parents names only that he was Joseph Clarke (Joiner). We do know they had a shop in Liverpool but whether it was her or her parents i am not sure. We have no family documents on them because they were bombed out during the war and I presume all records went up in smoke.

Unusual for a father to list both names on daughter's marriage certificate, I wonder if it was because Joseph was a name that he didn't use, but felt he had to since it was his first name?

I doubt that he would have been noted as "alive" on the marriage certificate. The most you can hope for is that the word "deceased" wasn't on the certificate but we are aware from experience that sometimes the question may not have been asked and so the omission cannot be taken for granted that he is still living at that time.

Thanks for your help the family Joseph and Emily you have noted is who I thought they might be but I cannot find any of them in the 1891, 1901 census, not even any of the children, so I don't know where else to go from here. It didn't say deceased on the marriage certficate but since her husbands father was deceased on the same certificate I am presuming he was still alive then (and she did say they were a long living family) missed the fact they were illusive though (haha). Interesting you say the they didn't always put both names on the certificates i didn't know that.

Hi Karen,

I found a Teresa Hickey living at 82 Lombard St in 1901 age 20 born Liverpool, living with her mother Jane.

I couldn't find any Clarke's in Lombard St in 1901.

Hi thanks for your help. I presume Theresa Hickey must have been her best friend since she was the same age and her witness. Can't understand why she would have been living with them and not her parents at least her father who was still alive. I try every avenue and can't seem to get any further. It is a mystery to me and after nearly 2 years I don't get any nearer.

Hi Karen,

I know what it's like looking for the Clarke's, that is my family line too, but no relation to yours.

I had one of my Clarke's marry from her brother's pub, although her mother was still alive, so I suppose they used an address of convenience to get married from.
