I am researching my family who lived at various addresses in Liverpool between 1887 and 1899. My Great Grandfather was John Robinson Born in Wigton Cumbria in 1848 He was married to Elizebeth Jane Robinson Born Worcester in 1851. Both are buried in West Derby Cemetery. There were 7 children Rueben John Robinson Born Leeds 1871, Bessie Born Leeds 1880, Frank born Leeds 1875, Jane Ann born Leeds 1873, John Born Leeds 1879 and Lizzie born Leeds 1877.
My Great Grandfather is reported to have been involved in Toffee Making and was a Confectioner/Sugar Boiler
They Lived in East Hamand, Boundry Street, Seller Street , Easly Street all in Kirdale.
Can anyone offer information on the family

I have found the family in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census.

Yes I am aware of Rueben John and Priscilla Woolland who were my grandparents and I have a great deal on the Woolland family.

My Great Grand Parents were John and Elizebeth Jame and I don't have a great deal on these other than the year and place of birth.and date and place of death and where they are buried. This I have from an old family bible. As I said John was a Confectioner and my father always told me he was involved in Toffee Making but lost his position through drink.

I am interested in the other children of the marraige if you can help. I have researched Census records without success.

Rueben John and Priscilla left Liverpool about 1903 to move to South Wales I have a full record of Births, Marraiges and Burials since that date.

Was Robinson Elizabeth's maiden name? If you don't already have it, their marriage cert would be an asset.

Unfortunately I don't know where or when they were married or Elizebeth's maiden name. The only clue I have is that they lived in Leeds when my Grandfather was born and he was the oldest child. I have tried the online BMD records but I couldn't find anything other than two John Robinsons having been born in Wigton in 1848.

If I was to apply for a Death Certificate of both John and Elizebeth would they contain details of their DOB and Her Maiden Name.

Thanks for your help. I'm now going to apply for certificates of BDM from the information you have supplied and see what turns up. I have tried to trace the Children of John and Elizebeth and have made contact with the granddaughter of Jane Ann Robinson.But she doesn't have any great information of the family history. I have been informed that John Robinson son of John and Elizebeth lived in Flintshire at the beginning of the 20th Century and had a daughter Charlotte but I cant find him in the Census

Anyway here's the full 1871 census entry:

ROBINSON, Ruben John - Son - 0 - 1871 - Yorkshire.
RG number: RG10 Piece: 4565 Folio: 29 Page: 27
Address: Bedford Place, Leeds, Yorkshire.

Unfortunately, there are 29 John Robinsons born in Cumberland between 1846 and 1850 in the 1861 census. 7 are from Wigton. So we need the marriage cert to find his father's name and occupation.

WDby Workhouse 1901 bn Leeds single 22 dock labr.
It may not be your John.
He could have been in the hospital section? I'm not sure.

While looking for a Flint connection for John R junior, I thought I'd post info on some of the children in the family in the 1891 at 37 Tapley PLace, Liverpool. Bessie is shown as born Liverpool; There's a dtr Helena bn 1882 - Liverpool; and son Arthur bn 1884 in Liverpool. And there's a g,dtr Florence bn 1891 Liverpool.

I think he's a 'resident' inmate in West Derby with an outside job. Why I think that is because my maternal g.g.father is on the previous page and he was also a 'resident' with a job on the 'outside'!

Do you think there were lodgings available to "homeless" persons at the workhouse while they continued working??

I am certain that there were facilities similar to hostels where homeless folk, homeless for whatever reason, could put their head on a bed and be fed while they worked outside. I suppose they would be required to make some contribution to the institution's coffers.

Re my g.g.father... Oddly the image had been mis-indexed and his page popped up when I clicked on John R. That's how I knew immediately where JR was an inmate without paging back to the beginning. By 1904 my ggf was living at a 'civvy' street address with the same occupation, cabbie, and died that year in the workhouse infirmary. His son was Thomas, that elusive g.father that you found for me under another name in 1881 and 1891, and he took over the cab and licence.
