Possibly STITT Street Paula?

Good Luck,
Pauline.

I thought it was 'Stitt St.' too Pauline ... but it didn't seem like a proper word?

Thanks very much philrob, here are the residents of no. 24, along with their ages:

Thomas Minahan 40
Blanche '' 35
Charles '' 11
Kathleen '' 9
Joseph '' 7
John '' 4
Thomas '' 1
... and lodging with them was my gr-gr-grandfather, John McQuinn aged 50, who was a boot/shoemaker, born in Wigtown, Scotland.

Bestest,
Paula.

Hi,
I've got that street in my PAF. Sure it's STITT Street. On two marriage certs of mine. It was Stitt Street as far back as the 1861 census.

The reference should enable people to find it easier. It is Stitt Street, which has been in censuses from at least 1861 maybe even earlier.

The enumerator's description gives "Stitt Street from Langsdale Street to Everton Brow".

Langsdale Street can still be found if you use www.maps.google.co.uk

Thanks all for your input ... much appreciated.

Now that I've established that it IS Stitt Street, I've found several 'google' links! According to the LRO (352 CLE/CON/2/37/1-36) it was called 'Albert Street' prior to becoming Stitt St.

I'm guessing that the street 'disappeared' during the Everton slum clearances ... or maybe it has been re-named again?!

Paula.

That area around Soho Street has been redeveloped with estates of new houses, the modern maps show a few cul de sacs but the name doesn't seem to be there any more.

I've actally found a photo of Stitt Street ... or rather the corner of it! On a website absolutely bursting with post-war photos of Liverpool. It's called inacityliving.
I guess some of you will be familiar with the site already ... but if you're not, and you have a couple of hours to spare, here's the link:

I lived in Stitt Street until we moved in 1961, after which it was demolished. Could you be a more specific about how I can find the picture of Stitt St on the site you mention. It is a fine site, but very big.

So sorry pamour, I don't have a more specific link to the Stitt Street photo ... I found it by chance when I was browsing the site. (I can't even remember which section it was in, but I imagine it was amongst the post-war black & white photos).

You could perhaps contact the site owner to ask for directions to the photo:

email address amended to prevent spamming - to use change the [at] to @ to use MA

Hi,
Unfortunately, there's no 'index' on the site apart from the 3 'general' headings; A bit about me...The Tenements.... and Other Liverpool pics.

Can only suggest you sit down with a cup of tea and a plate of bickies and browse away. You should also keep an eye open for Albert Street; the former name of Stitt Street I believe.

OK, I've found the photo again! There's no easy way to direct you to it though pamour. (And the website is configured in such a way that images can't can't be 'saved' or cut & pasted).

If you look in the 'post war black and white street scenes' ... and scroll down until the cursor on the R-hand side of your screen is about 1/2 way down the page.

The image itself is the junction of Stitt Street and Wm Henry Street, with an old gas street light in the foreground.

Below it is an old photo of Canterbury St ... which is followed by a line of text in orange lettering which reads: The aftermath of the Toxteth Riots July 1981. The orange lettering provides a bit of a 'landmark' ... ie: you can look out for it as you're scrolling down

I hope you manage to find the photo!

Best wishes,
Paula.

Stitt Street is mentioned in the text on the page that Paula gave, so when you open the page use the menu at the top of your screen

Edit> Find> and type in Stitt

This should find it quite easily.
