My turn for a question or two!
First... Does anyone have information about the Orphanage that was in Myrtle Street in the 1920s and which moved out to Woolton Road in 1930.
Second... Does anyone know if the admittance and leaving records or registers for 1929 to 1945 are in the Liverpool archives?

Hi DickieSam,
Not sure about 'Myrtle Street' orphanage BUT possibly the 'Woolton' one was 'Strawberry Fields' ? made famous by John Lennon's song..
Someone with more expertise will be able to answer.
The reasoning behind my answer:
Both my father and his sister were put into a 'day care orphanage' in Woolton after the death of their father Oscar Fairhurst in 1926.
My dad was aged 4 years, his sister was a very young baby; Nan said it was called 'Strawberry Fields'. No aid in those days.. therefore the children were there during the day whilst she worked.
Many years later my Nan (their mother) pointed out to me the place where they were.. also where she met her 2nd hubby.. David 'Gray' (my board name) he was a house master there. (marr cert)
This is another 'Very' Long story that i would love to share at some stage

The records are at Liverpool Record Office - look under Salisbury House School. However if you look on the National Archives and the Access to Archives (or just google Myrtle Street Orphanage) you get a whole history of the orphanages that might interest you and then a list of what is available.

Just to add another Woolton Orphanage to the List. On the site of what is now the Marie Curie Sunnybank Hospice, on Speke Road in Woolton, there used to stand a very large old house. In fact it was taken over by Marie Curie for use as a hospice before the present one was built, but before that it was a Police Orphanage and had been for many years. Just thought you might like to know!

A few comments were made recently about Strawberry Fields when somebody else was looking for a Woolton/Hunts Cross Orphanage.
http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=8843 it appears that it was run by the Salvation Army.

What can I say but a big thanks to all of you for the responses. I now know that the Liverpool Orphanage eventually became Salisbury House School and there are Admission Papers in the Archives for 1930, the year I am particularly interested in.
Unfortunately it seems I may have to wait until 2030 in order to access them. I might just last that long but it would be, as the Duke of Wellington said at Waterloo, 'a d****d close run thing'!
Thanks again folks for the interest and help.

Here's wishing you a long life!!

but might it be worth asking the question direct, you never know if you might get a friendly librarian who was willing to bend rules slightly? especially if you were able to prove that the people you were interested in were already deceased. Would anybody ask for you when they were visiting the RO?

Thanks for the good wishes MaryA! My daily dose of WD40 helps! I've sent you a PM about my interest in this orphanage. Some advice about an approach to the Record Office would be welcome.
