Richard Duke and Lydia McDowall

Richard Duke m Lydia McDowall 18 December 1851 St Peters.

Richard was the older brother of my George Duke.
We thought Richard had died as Lydia remarried in 1875. Richard was a Chairmaker as was his father Henry Duke.

Now, I have been contacted by someone who is related to a Richard Duke, Chairmaker, but living in Sunderland with another wife --Elizabeth-and family.
He will have to send for one of Richard and Elizabeth childrens birth certifiactes to find Elizabeth maiden name in order to send for thier marriage certificate and check if his Richards father is also Henry the chairmaker.
So, I need to find if my Richard m 1851 father is also Henry the Chairmaker.
I would very much appreciate a look up if possible
Thanks
Dorothy

Here's some IGI info for Richard Duke. His marriage to Lydia Jane McDowall was at St Nicholas on 18 Dec 1851. Richard's christening was at St Peters on 11 April 1830. The father is Henry and the mother is Charlotte.

Hi Dot

who was Lydias mother as shes living with a Lydia Liley in 1841 at Devonshire Place Lpool.. head of the house was a Thomas Speed occupation a Butcher

by 1851 Elizabeth St Lpool..Thomas Speed and Lydia Liley have kids cant see a marriage for them though..Lydia McDowell isnt with them and i can't find her on that census...

1861 8 Finch Place Lpool
Head Lydia Liley Speed 51 Widow b Wiltshire
Son Henry age 11 b Lpool
Son Edward age 8 b Lpool
Lodger Lydia Duke age 30 b Middlesex
Son Charles Duke age 2 b Lpool.

She seems to have known this Lydia Liley now Speed a long time and i wondered if she was her mother.. maybe married a McDowell then a Liley or did she have Lydia as a McDowell and then marry a Liley.

Can only see one Richard Duke b Lpool on the 1861 born 1827 on board a ship in Navy..

If Richard was still married to Lydia i am wondering how she remarried to John Prichard..in 1875.. that would be bigamy.. and the same for Richard with this Elizabeth..its definalty your Richard as his daughter is called Charlotte after his mother..

Cannot see John Prichard & Lydia in 1881 i see oone John Prichard in 1881 in Wavertree a lodger Widow... could be him.

Hi Colette
I think that Lydia McDowells mother must have been related to Lydia Liley??
They both came from Wiltshire.
I think her father was Robert McDowell?

Lydia McDowell /Duke m John Pritchard in 1875. She died shortly after.

So, before I go any further I would like to find if the Richard Duke she married is >mine> with His father being Henry Duke Chairmaker.

Am hoping the person who got in touch is going to get the birth cert of one of Richard and Elizabeths children to find Elizabeth maiden name and then look for a marriage---and see if that Richard has a father Henry a Chairmaker.

So, if this is correct, then both Lydia and Richard were Bigamists---although I suspect she may have though he was dead. Perhaps he went to sea and for some reason didn't go home when he got back, but instead started a new life and family in Sunderland.
Thanks for the help Colette

Hi Dot

Yes looks like Robert was the father of Lydia.. as she is down twice on the 1841 at home and with Lydia Liley

Whos looking like she could be her mother Mary Ann's sister.. Mary Ann was formaly Payne... so maybe Lydia was too and married a Liley...

The little girl Eleanor Liley whos living with Robert & Mary Ann in 1841 aged 7.. might be Lydia's daughter... by 1851 shes living with Lydia and Thomas Speed.. says born Redbourne Lancs..

Lydia McDowall says born Middlesex London in 1861.. also in 1851 Robert and Mary have another Daughter named Mary aged 22 with them she was also born Middlesex London...

1861 has Thomas & William duke grandsons with Rob & Mary, so deffo her parents..

As you say just need to confirm if Richard is your man..the signs are all there born Liverpool .. Chairmaker.. daughter Charlotte son George.

I do see an Elizabeth Colepitts marrying a Richard Duke 1868 Durham.. that could be her..also the little girl Mary A C born c 1862 Blyth Northumberland maybe Elizabeth's daughter from a first marriage ..

You are right in asking this person to get one of Elizabeth & Richard's children's birth certs to get Elizabeths maiden name.. pity theres no parish records online for Durham...

This post seems to have strayed away from the original topic of a look up request, and I know there is more investigations going on in the background too.

It might be a good idea to amend the subject heading of this post and add your request on after Pauline's http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9206 so keeping all the look ups together.

Hi Irene,
Thank you so very much for doing this look up for me.
Now I have to wait and see if my contact gets the marriage certificate of Richard and Elizabeth.

So far, it looks like we may have a couple of Bigamists, so looking forward to see what happens.

Thanks once again

I thought I would do an update for Richard Duke.

He married--again --on the 11 Feb 1868 to Elizabeth Colpitts.
His father was Henry Duke the Chairmaker
So--looks like he was a Bigamist after all.
Thank you all for the help

Dorothy

PS. Am not sure if this next bit needs a seperate entry or not??
I am trying to contact a lady in Australia who is related to George Duke and Richard Duke through their brother James Duke
We shared a lot of info, but I can't seem to get in touch--her email

Have you checked on GenesReunited? if you could identify her there hopefully a message would get through their system. If you aren't a member but could identify her, maybe somebody on here would help out by sending the message for you.

I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I met the lady through a Surname List on Rootsweb. (Duke)
She was so kind to me sending the info she had. However, I haven't had contact for a few years now.

I think she lived in Queensland?? Noosa Shire?? The family had paper mills I think.

Will check Genessreunited and see if she is there.
Thank you all for the help and suggestions

Hi Dot

It looks lie Lydia & Richard had 3 sons

Thomas b 1852

William b 1854

Charles Henry b 1858

by 1861 when shes lodging again with Lydia Liley Speed her status in unmarried..so its got me wondering if she and Richard had parted ways even as early as that.

Would still like to find her in 1851 :(

Still wondering was Elizabeth Coalpitts married before..
