Iam trying to trace where the wife of my g,g,grandfather came from. They were William Wood, from Witton cum Twambrooks, aged 20yrs, a waterman, and she was Elizabeth Pemberton, aged 20yrs, a servant, working in Newton le Willows, but not of that county. They were married at St. Elphins Church, by banns on Nov. 21 1841.
Can anybody help?

Hi Pete
Love your avatar!

I'll be brief, in 1851 they are in Witton, Wm a waterman, Elizabeth 29 listed born Witton as are all their kiddies.
Her two eldest are Thomas & Martha
IGI has a baptism in Christleton of Elizabeth Pemberton, parents Thos & Martha 26/2/1820. (also Mary 1817)

1861 Wm's wife is Sarah.
Possibly Elizabeth has died, there's a gap between birth of more kiddies.

1871 census listed as Woods.

If you don't have census info, let me know & I'll post details for you.

Happy New Year

Hi, Tina,
Good to make contact again. I have the1851 census, also the IGI for Elizabeth and for Mary Pemberton. On the marriage cert. her fathers' occupation is given as Farmer., Ishould think in the Chester area. So it looks like another trip to the Chester Records Office. If you could let me have census info for 1861, I would be very grateful. Can't find anything here.
Best regards, and a happy, healthy New Year to you

Could this be a possibility for the 1861 census? Sorry Tina!

1861 RG9 2672 42 30
20 Litherland Alley "Cheshire Arms"
William Wood 40 victualler and waterman bn Northwich
Elizabeth wife 30 bn Deasenham Cheshire
Betsy daughter 15 bn Northwich
Ann J daughter 7 bn Northwich
Frances daughter 5 bn Liverpool

Just being nosey because there seem to be a lot of Wood families in the Witton/Northwich area but how do you know you have the correct family? Do you have a birth certificate for one of the children?

Hi

You have said her father was a farmer on the 1841 marriage cert - but you haven't told us his name. Was it Thomas as per the IGI entries listed by Tina?

What was the name and occupation of William's father

Have you tried the Cheshire OPC website

Thanks Carole, good pointers :D
I believe I've found Elizabeth Pemberton in 1841 census aged 20yrs female servant not born county.
There's a surgeon whose wife is a school mistress, lots of pupils listed & servants.
Mansion House, Newton, Winwick.
HO107/524/ Bk 14/Enum 7/Folio 27
The district of Newton would explain the reason for her marriage, in her parish at the time.

Hi, all
This Wood family in Litherland Alley IS a different family, and the ones on the 1861 census are also a different family. I have a copy of the 1841 census, and your info. is correct. I apologize for not putting parents names, William's fathers name is also William, a waterman(it was the family business) and Elizabeth's father's name was Thomas, a farmer.
The witnesses at the wedding were Joseph and Mary Pemberton, they signed with their mark, but the bride and groom could write.

Hello, all,
At last a result on my Elizabeth Pemberton query.
Education Officer, you were right, the 1861 census is the right family, but Elizabeth is forty, not thirty. She had two other daughters, who both died in 1854, whilst she was carrying Ann Jane, who was named after her two deceased sisters.
Eliizabeth was a farmers daughter from Davenham, near Northwich.
She died in 1885.
Thanks to all of you for your help, on to the next quest now!!

All the best, Pete.
