William James Farrell - 'supper bar proprietor' - c.1934

by eva
My great grandfather, William James Farrell, is listed with the occupation 'supper bar proprietor' in Liverpool on my grandparent's marriage certificate (dated 4 Feb 1934).
William was possibly born in Wales (possibly the Rhondda, estimate about 1880). I think he married Mary Walsh.
His daughter, Ethel Farrell (born 1907, Liverpool) is my grandmother. She married Thomas Logan (born 1906, Liverpool). Ethel was living on Titchfield Street when she was married in 1934.
So, now have hit a bit of a wall. Would greatly appreciate any info on ancestors or just if anyone knows about the supper bar.... thanks!

Hi Eva,
I don't know how much information you have on the Farrell Family but I've done a quick check and found the following:
There is a William James Farrell married Mary Dora Boyle at St Mary's Kirkdale Liverpool on 15th June 1913. William's Father is named as William Bell Farrell. (Family Search)
Additionaly there is a William Farrell married Hannah Hughes at St Mary's Wavertree Liverpool on 2nd October 1904 (Family Search)
There is an Ethelreda Farrell married a surname of Logan in the March Quarter of 1934, Vol 8b Page 17 (Free BMD).
If I've duplicated information you already have......sorry - but I hope it's of some use to you. Anyway I'm sure the other peepers will help you with information,
regards ,

Hi Eva,
Just to confuse the issue, there is a Robert Farrell married Mary Ann Walsh in the March Quarter of 1900 at Liverpool Register Office.
Is it possible the Mary Walsh you mentioned married William Farrell's brother or another relative and not William?
Regards,
Roy Montrose

Hello Eva and welcome.
You will get lots of help here, fair dinkum.
1938 Directory Gores/Kellys has
James Farrell fried fish dealer 39 Titchfield St
between Burlington St & Back Portland St.
I hope this helps.
If you have Thomas Logan's occupation from cert, we can look for him in 1938.
Cheers
Tina

Hi again Eva
It could be worth your while to buy credits in 1911 census.
There is Ethel Farrell bn 1907 in Lpool.
I've tried to find other people without paying.
There is a Mary old enough to be her Mum & a James.
No luck for a Wm Farrell bn Wales 1880 ish.

Hello Eva and welcome.
How did you estimate William's birth year as abt 1880 and do you have Ethel's birth cert to confirm her mother's maiden name as Walsh?
If confirmed, this might be William and Mary:
Marriages Sep 1902 ;
FARRELL, William James - Chester - 8a - 846.
Walsh, Mary - Chester - 8a - 846.
About that 'Supper Bar', if I remember correctly that's posh terminology for a smart fish and chips shop. I had an uncle who owned/ran a 'chippie' in Aigburth and it had Supper Bar in the signage. There were tables and chairs where you could sit with your fish and chips in their newspaper wrapping on your way home from the flicks and buy a cup of tea as well. Ah, those were the days!

Hi and welcome to the forum,
I believe like Dickiesam that your first step should be the birth certificate of Ethel, it's the only way to confirm her mother's name.
Ethel Farrell Q3 1907 West Derby 8b 636
also I do remember Supper Bars being chippies with a few tables in them, so both an eat in and a take away. I suspect Tina's find in the directory would be right.

I think that the marriage that Dickie Sam found in Sep 1902 is the correct one. I have found Ethel in 1911 at 100 Dalyrmple Street, Scotland Road.
James Farrell - b1879 - Liverpool - Street Hawker Assisting Business - Fish Trade
Mary B1884 Marr 8 years -Liverpool - Assisting Business - Fish Trade
Elizabeth - b 1903 Chester, Cheshire
Ethel - b 1907 Chester, Cheshire
Catherine - b 1910 (13 months) Liverpool
I also found in FreeBMD William J Farrell 1913 Mar quarter Liverpool 8b 25
and Ellen Farrell 1915 Sep quart Liverpool 8b 8
Hope these help

What a wealth of information! Thank you all so much.
Love that a 'supper bar' was a posh fish & chippy. My grandma was very serious about her fish.
Didn't know about Gores/Kelly, really useful information found there by forum members.
In 1943 Thomas Logan was an Able Seaman Royal Navy / dock labourer (W JX 639472) so thinking I'll look into Navy records.
I did get a birth cert for Ethel (June 1907) but her daughter told me the mother's name wasn't right (Jessie Searson). She told me Ethel's mother was "Mary Walsh", so it looks like DickieSam found the right details for her marriage to William Farrell. The listing of 'James Farrell' with the family might just be the name 'William James Farrell was known by'.
Thanks to all!
