Soldiers at Whiston Hospital

Post by egandy »

My mother Minnie Abbott Gandy of Farnworth Widnes worked as a nurse at Whiston Hospital during WWII caring for inured POW's from Italy. I have a several photographs from there including one with all the medical and military staff.

Does anyone have any more information about this period in the hospital's history or know of any records from that time?

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The message posted by Margie on the first page of this thread appears to be quite a comprehensive list of what is available, in the Liverpool Record Office

They may do a short search for you free of charge but if any more time is required they may make a charge.

Thanks - I checked the list of records but these all seem to refer to the time when the hospital was an asylum, not a war hospital for injured POW's. Maybe I should be looking for the appropriate War Office records instead?

Whiston Hospital Records

Post by Katie »

Hi

Records for WHiston Hospital are held by Knowsley Archives. If you google Knowsley Archives and local Studies you should get the contact details. There will be a closure on the employment records they cover the dates 1917 - 1966

Hope this helps

Is this the site you mean Katie? There is an email contact that might be useful since Egan isn't in England.

Knowsley Archives contact

Post by Katie »

Hi Mary.

Here is the e.mail address for Lin Rice who works at the Archives. These are held in Kirkby Library. She will be able to help him.

lin.rice@knowsley.gov.uk

For anyone trying to track down what records are held at the various Records Office and Local Studies Departments for the Country the National Register of Archives is Brilliant I always search this database before going to visit Record Offices. Its searchable by Place Name, Family name etc

You surprise me, I wasn't aware that there were any archives held at Kirkby. I'll ask about Whiston next time I'm there, it won't be until next Saturday though.

I obviously referred Egan to Margie's list in error, blame me for not having read the post carefully enough, but as it was tagged onto a Rainhill post I just assumed both enquiries were about the same place.

I think it best if this was made into a separate post to clarify matters.

If an appointment is needed then it might be best if in the first instance, Egan sends an email to see what is available.

If he gets a confirmation that there is anything of interest then I could then arrange an appointment and photocopy the docs. if they will let me.
