Before I make my first post (which will be a request for help as you might guess) I just wanted to say hello to everyone. It is very nice to meet you all.

I am researching the following families from the Warrington area:
Pilling
Graham
Jaundrell
McCarthy
Tomlinson
Phillips
Drury

My great great grandfather Thomas Phillips (c1839-) was born in Higher Walton and worked as a blacksmith. He married Margaret Unknown (c1840-) who was born Ireland. They had at least six children, one of whom was Catherine aka Kate (c1867). The family can be seen on this 1881 census: Class: RG11; Piece: 3795; Folio: 37; Page: 17

Catherine Phillips married William Francis McCarthy (1865-1929) from Scotland, in 1884 at Warrington. They had my grandmother Elizabeth in 1887. A three year-old Elizabeth can be seen living with her dad William and her grandmother Matilda McCarthy on this 1891 census: Class: RG12; Piece: 3078; Folio 54; Page 8

Elizabeth's mother Kate is living with her parents in 1891 (correctly shown as 'Married' but wrongly shown as 'Phillips' rather than 'McCarthy'. That census can be seen here: Class: RG12; Piece: 3079; Folio 32; Page 17

I cannot for the life of me find my grandmother Elizabeth (aged 13 or 14) McCarthy in the 1901 census. I cannot find her mother Catherine/Kate or her father William either. I have made lots of searches under 'Mc Carthy', 'McCarty', 'Mc Carty', 'Carty' etc with no joy.

William McCarthy (1865-1929) by the way was living in Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland in 1871 with his parents, as shown here: Parish ED: 91; Page: 6; Line: 19. In 1881 William can be seen here: Class: RG11; Piece: 3797; Folio: 31; Page: 1

If some kind soul could find my grandmother Elizabeth McCarthy and her parents in 1901 I would be very grateful. I am sure they are out there, mis-transcribed probably.

If I can help anyone else who might be researching any of the above families in Warrington, then please let me know.

Matilda is an easy one, I suspect you have her entry in 1901 with her son John and Robert & Henry (grandsons?), boarding with daughter Ellen and sil James Barker and children. RG13; Piece: 3582; Folio: 146; Page: 39

Just mentioning this to save others searching for her.

Have you checked the Jandrells out who were living next door to the McCarthys in 1891, I don't know how they are related but suspect they must be as they are in your list of names.

I know your post was very complete but I would just ask one or two other questions to get a timeline - when did Elizabeth marry and where? ie still in Warrington or had she moved elsewhere?

Have you found them on the 1911 census and again are they still in Warrington?

I did know that Matilda McCarthy (1839-1911) nee Tomlinson was living with the Barker family in 1901 (thank you). Matilda's daughter (my great grandfather William's younger sister) Ellen (1876-) married James Barker (1875-) in 1895 at Warrington.

My grandmother Elizabeth McCarthy (1887-1976) married Benjamin Jaundrell (1883-1936) on 19 May 1907 at Warrington. An eight year-old Benjamin (transcribed as Jandrell) can be seen in 1891 at: Class: RG12; Piece: 3078; Folio 54; Page 8
As you pointed out, Benjamin Jaundrell's family was living next to a widowed Matilda McCarthy and her family in 1891.

I have resisted the 1911 'pay-per-view' service thus far I'm afraid. I am expecting Santa to bring me a 1911 subscription for my Christmas box. But as my Elizabeth McCarthy had already been married for four years, I am 100% confident that she will be easily traced in Warrington in 1911.

As an aside, the odd thing I noticed is the swathe of empty houses in Warburton Street shown on the 1891 census (Warburton Street is one of the streets where my family had lived historically). Odd numbers 29 to 45 and even numbers 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46 Warburton Street, Warrington have no details listed against them. By 1901 they are fully occupied again. I don't know if this has any bearing.

The reason I wondered about the 1911 census was in case they were at the same address, but if they only married in 1907 then it's probably unlikely.

Well I'll tell you anyway that Benjamin is 28, Elizabeth Ann is 24, Annie Jaundrell is 3 and John McCarthy is 50 and they are living in 11 Warburton Street.

after checking freebmd and lancsbmd the most likely marriage for Thomas Phillips is in 1861....the only one is in Liverpool from 1856 (that would make Margaret 16) to 1867....

so obviously Margaret was a widow...hence the 2 surnames...though which was her maiden name I don`t know....but McGill looks like an Irish name............allan
