I have an Elizabeth Brady (nee Leary) born 1831 or 1833, on the 1871 Census, at Denbigh Street, she is born in Wexford, Ireland but in the 1881 Census, at Porter Street, she is born in Waterford, Ireland. It's not a bad transcription the originals definitely state Wexford and Waterford. I take it these Census records were done verbally hence the mistake can anyone with any knowledge of regional Irish accents, her husband was from Cavan, take a guess at which might be the right one? The 1871 Census (Wexford) original looks neater the other one has some crossings out so I'm thinking that it might be Wexford.

Hi Col,
It's possible, indeed probable, that Elizabeth was born on the border between the two adjacent counties. Back then the boundaries were not exactly set in stone and it didn't really matter anyway to most working class folk. Half a townland could be in one county and the other half in the next county. Townlands are a very ancient Irish way of naming an area after a particular geographical feature etc. Could be from a single acre up to several 100 acres and more.

Have you tried finding her birth/baptism/christening in the IGI?

This latter is free to search but pay to view. A bit expensive at €5 a record, but you could get a good hit.

Thanks Dickiesam. I've used the IFHF site in the past it has most of the counties but unfortunately is missing a few including Wexford & Waterford. No sign of her on the IGI. Nevermind at least I've got some county info on this one.
