I'm looking to find out where in Ireland my Holland people, William and Jane, came from. They first appear in Liverpool at Denison Street in the 1881 Census. William John Holland, was a railway porter (cotton loader), born about 1851 in Ireland, Jane Holland, his wife, born about 1847 in Ireland & their son Patrick Holland, born 1880 in Liverpool. I've looked on various Irish sites and haven't found anything matching. The Holland name is all over Ireland it probably went there with the first Norman/English settlers in the middle ages who were later absorbed into Irish society.

I've made contact with a distant relation on another website who is trying to find out, just like me, where in Ireland William John and Jane Holland came from. She thinks that Jane's maiden name may have been Brogan and that according to family folklore William and Jane left Ireland to go to America but stayed on in Liverpool because Jane was too ill for the trip while having her first child. It seems that the Holland children who were born in Liverpool in the 1880s didn't want to leave to go on to America and they ended up staying in Liverpool.

Your first step is to make certain of Jane's maiden name and the only way to do that is from Patrick's birth certificate. There's only one Patrick Holland born at that date in Liverpool so it's fairly certain to be the right one, however, just to be on the safe side you can order from the GRO specifying the parents names, that way IF it's wrong then they will only charge you for a search fee rather than the full price for an incorrect record.

Also if you have them up to the 1911 census, are William and Jane still living? how many years do they say they have been married?

I see that by the 1901 census William is a widower. Have you found him in the 1911? In that census the town or county of birth is often given as well as the country.

There is a death Lpool rego 1909 for a William John Holland 57yrs.

Patrick is in 1911 census, Lpool aged 31.

In the absence of a William H marrying a Jane in FreeBMD I did a quick search here, on the Family Search pilot site for the Irish Civil BMD indexes:

Got 8 hits on a William Holland and one, below, on William John. Unfortunately, I believe because it is a pilot site, the record is incomplete, but there's enough to get the relevant cert. Banbridge is in the registration district of Armagh or Down in what is now Northern Ireland.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if a birth certificate for Patrick would yield a maiden name for Jane I'll get one and see what it says. William and Jane were both deceased by 1911 so unfortunately we can't estimate the marriage date using the 1911 Census. I was thinking that with Patrick being their first child born in 1880 they would probably have married around 1878/79 in Ireland.

Hi, when you get Patrick's birth cert and find Jane's maiden name you can do a marriage search on the Irish Civil Indexes pilot site to see if you get a hit that matches the William John H in Banbridge. If you don't it could be because all the data isn't up yet.

Just to update this enquiry I got the birth certificate for Patrick (he was born on 17th December 1879 at Denison Street but not registered until 19th January 1880) and Jane's maiden name was indeed Brogan. I'll keep returning to the Irish sites and hopefully at some point their information will be added.
