cavanagh family in widnes 1891

Post by Mariam82 »

My ancestor andrew cavanagh and family lived at Church St in 1881 and on his death in 7 Jan 1891 at Moss St. I have much information about his origins and also where his family moved to after 1891.
Is there a way of finding out where he might be buried. I have looked online and found 3 possible churches - st marys, st bede's and st patricks. Would these be likely choices given their address?
Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'm not very well up on Widnes but a site I often use for searching for churches and cemeteries is www.genuki.org where there is a listing for Widnes http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Widnes/

It might help if you knew the religion of the family ie which church did they marry in? as I notice that two of those you mention - St Bede and St Patrick are Roman Catholic whereas St Mary is C of E.

It would seem that the area may be covered by Warrington and there is a page on the Warrington BC site about tracing a grave, http://www.warrington.gov.uk/Adviceandb ... acing.aspx the only two cemeteries mentioned early enough are Rixton and Manchester Road, Warrington, probably these are too far away but might be worth checking if the closer ones prove unsuccessful.

Hi
I posted this inofmration on the query about the Purcell family also in Widnes. I think it might be helpful to you

St Patrick's was only opened in 1888. The original registers and films for the older RC churches in Widnes are at Lancashire Record Office at Preston . This is taken from their catalogue

WIDNES, St Marie; Archdiocese of Liverpool
C 1861-1901 D 1865-1899 Orig reg RCWS 2
C 1861-1901 D 1865-1899 Copy reg MF 9/271-273
C 1864-1941 M 1866-1941 Copy reg Microfilm MF 9/173-174
WIDNES, St Patrick; Archdiocese of Liverpool
C 1888-1906 Orig reg RCWS 3
C 1888-1941 M 1889-1941 Copy reg Microfilm MF 9/176

There may well be copies at Cheshire RO in Chester or possibly at Warrington. It might be worth a phone call to wherever is nearest.
