Hi everyone thanks for marriage look-up last weekend. I was wondering if anyone out there can help me before I lay an ancestor to rest. I have been trying to trace the mother of my husbands great grandmother - Eliza Ann Brough (married name Mitchell) born in 1852 in West Indies, Jamaica a british citizen. Her father was supposedly a gentleman - Joseph Brough born in Aspatria, Cumbria in 1806. I know all about his family but cannot trace Elizas birth certificate or her fathers marriage certificate to trace her mother. I have tried every website going including IGI, National archives to name but a few also been in touch Jamaica RO and archives and even Jamaican High commission (who did not reply) but they cannot help without the county she was born in but that is assuming that they registered her!!

A fabulous lady in Cumbrian RO has searched high and low for me but with no luck. We can find loads about her fathers family but not her, she first appears on 1871 census with her aunts family the Pattinsons. Can anyone give me any advice before I give up the ghost on her mother.

What was Joseph doing in Jamacia was he in the Army or something ..did he come back as you say his daughter is living with her Aunt, i take it thats Joseph's sister ?.


Eliza Ann was born c 1852 so shes still over in Jamacia in 1861 is she..

Yes Eliza was still in Jamaica in 1861 we think her father Joseph was there on business it stated on her marriage certificate he was a Gentleman. We dont know what he did just that she appears on 1871 census. Yes Josephs sister was grace Pattinson(nee Brough).

go to a local LDS FHL and ask them to look up this series of magazines I know they ave them in salt lake city. it is a treasure house of info

Susan means the Latter Day Saints (fab info Susan )

If you go to www.familysearch.org and click on 'Library' link at top of page you will see a link to FamilyHistory Centres. You can search for your local centre and go there.

Emma Lamar Brough daughter of the Late Joseph Brough ESQ to Mr E W Morris.

Could this be something as i dont know how many Joseph Brough's were over in Jamacia.. and i dont know when your Joseph died ?????

Joseph died in Cumbria late 1800 I think will look into your info tomorrow thanks very much will let you know if anything turns up must admit have not come across this info before would be great if it leads somewhere. Thanks again.

Thanks for info regarding Jamaica, did think for a minute that Emma (Lamar think Tamar)was her sister as Eliza called her daughter Emma and Josephs mother was called Tamar but Joseph is not marked as deceased on Eliza marriage certificate in 1877 just his occupation as Gentleman so think it not him, he was stated as late on Emmas marriage in Oct 1866 did think of writing to Jamaica again but will have to be certain that Emma is her sister and cannot confirm that - oh dear how disappointing was getting excited for minute but over the years this keeps happening, thanks anyway.

I wouldn't be too worried that the father does not have deceased written by it. We've all found instances when the father was in fact dead but it didn't say so on the certifictae. The question asked would be "What's your father's name?" and "What's your father's job?"

Unless you have a death certificate for the father I don't think you can dismiss it. It might be worth trying to find his death maybe he died in jamaica.

there is a Joseph Brough buried in St Ann's Jamaica but I can't get access to the record as it is a pay site...like $10 for a one month sub... if interested I can look up the site again.

it is all making sense now you never told us his mother was called Tamar..

Did you only know of one child for Joseph, Eliza Ann..if so now we have Emma Tamar Brough..too..and maybe others.. so he must have married over there also.
Tell us what you know about him when he left UK etc did he come back where is he if he did..he must be dead by 1866..did he die here or there thats what we need to find out..dont we..and the lady who he married we need to find who she was..
