Has anyone access to the 1871 census for 14 Essex Street Liverpool ?.

I am looking for Mathew or Joseph and Catherine Darcy nee Pender who had a child John William born there on 5/9/1871.

Or who was at the address at the time.

Regards

Ged

Hi Ged,

I had a look at the 1871 for Essex Street (Toxteth) and nobody Darcy there.

James Wynn was the head of the household,

Names were mixed, Dugan, Doran and Fallon at 14. (mostly Boarders)

Do you have William and family in later censuses?

In the 1881 census there is an 8 year old William with parents James and Kate and other siblings at 36 Talbot Street.
RG11; Piece: 3699; Folio: 38; Page: 24

But I also don't see a marriage for either a Matthew or Joseph Darcy to Catherine Pender.

Catherine Darcy or Darsey?

Hi,
This is the only Catherine Darcy/Darsey in Lancashire with a spouse Matthew in the 1871:

DARSEY, Matthew - Head - 27 - 1844 - Labourer - Ireland
DARSEY, Catherine - Wife - 25 - 1846 - Ireland.
RG number: RG10 Piece: 3800 Folio: 29 Page: 51
Address: 7 Court, 4 House, Prophet Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

Re a marriage, I couldn't find one either. But as they were both from Ireland perhaps they were already married when they arrived?

Thank you for the responses.

I did have them in the 1881 census.

I am struggling at the moment because I have 3 sets of Joseph (Mathew) Darcy (various spellings) married to Catherine Pender. The parish marriage register for Wexford is missing presumed lost so there is no trace of the marriage's.

1 Mathew Darcey - Catherine Pender
b c 1845 b 16/2/1845
Wexford Taghmon Wexford
Issue
John b c 1864 Wexford ?
Catherine b 2/2/1865 Wexford Workhouse
William Keating Illegitimate 8/4/1888 Wexford Workhouse
Mother Bridget Keating inmate.
Joseph b 13/10/1866 Taghmon Wexford
Mathew b 12/2/1869 Taghmon Wexford
Source Wexford parish registers, Irish GRO certificates, Wexford Workhouse Records
I spent a lot of time effort and cash reaserching this lot I was led to
believe by "Genealogy Research Ireland" in Wexford that this was my
family, I do not believe that now.

2 Mathew Darcy == Catherine Pender
b c 1855 b c 1857
Tipperary Taghmon
Issue
John William 5/9/1871 Liverpool
Source 1881 census

3 Joseph Darcy - Catherine Pender
b c 1848 b c 1854
Ireland Taghmon
Issue
John Darcy liverpool B 5/9/1871 certificate Is this the same John as above
Joseph Taghmon B 28/11/1872 certificate
Charles Albert Liverpool B 4/4/1885 certificate
Source 1891/1901/1911 census
These are definitly my family

When I try to reconcile or link these three families there is a problem with the wide variation in ages given at each census.

The only link would be appear to be John (William) Darcy who's age goes up in multiples of ten on each census.

I am confused .com

If you peruse this and have any views I would appreciate them

regards

Ged

Just noticed that during the posting process Catherine's birth year and place of birth have moved left and joined up with Joseph's, hope you can work them out

I think we find parents ages change a lot, often they may not have known themselves. The children's ages remain fairly consistent within a year or so and follow through from the 1881 to 1901 census.

However I do feel that in your scenario 3) the father's name Joseph in the 1891 census will be an error since in both the 1881 and the 1901 census it is noted as Mathew.

For anybody else looking to assist in the search or give an opinion

1881 name of Darcey
RG11; Piece: 3598; Folio: 4; Page: 1

1891 name of Daroy
RG12; Piece: 2966; Folio 97; Page 34

1901 Darcy
RG13; Piece: 3472; Folio: 95; Page: 56

In 1911 living with Catherine Darcy is a JOHN Pender, is this another relative perhaps? I don't know if Matthew has died in between 1901 and 1911.

You say that the Parish Register is missing - do you mean the actual register which is/was probably held at the Church, and I suspect it could be at any of the three, the Friary, Rowe Street or Bride Street. Have you tried an LDS centre to view the film? or if you have visited Wexford yourself and found the register missing, then the local library had it on film a couple of years ago, I know it covered the dates you are interested in since I was looking at it myself.

Yes Mathew died in 1901

Mathew Darcy’s death cert records Joseph Matthew Darcy died 22/11/1901 at 26 Parr St, St Helens (this was a lodging house suspect he went there for work or left home) Aged 54 ( would make birth year 1847 ) informant son Joseph Matthew Darcy, 178 Commercial Road.

Yes I visited Wexford. the Librarian Celistine Rafferty, Hilary Murphy editor of the the Wexford People and Rory Murphy JP, indicated this .
I was on tour in my caravan they told me to continiue my journey and that they would do the reaserch for me which was waiting for me when I got home, this confirmed there were no marriage records.
I also went to the record office Dublin and they indicated that it was missing, this was about 10 years ago. I actually went thro the available records births and deaths and kept a copy of the Darcy's recorded there as well as the Pender's

Maybe worth another visit

Another place to check is the Yola Farmstead Centre where there is a database of Wexford births and marriages, but beware they are very expensive - just for a quote!
