I have, today, had death certificates for two uncles who gassed themselves, one in 1929 and the other in 1934. In both cases there was no post mortem presumably because the cause of death was obvious. The inquests were held very soon afterwards - one on the day of death and the other the next day.

I wonder if there are records of inquests. One was held in Bootle and the other in Wellingborough.

The best bet may well be the local newspapers. For Bootle that would be the Bootle Times and it may have also be reported in the Liverpool papers.

I ought to know the name of the local paper for Wellingborough I used to live there.

Ed Officer

Liverpool Record Office only have Bootle Inquests from 1949
Local paper for Wellingborough is the Northants Evening telegraph
Any papers for Northamtonshire would be at their archives in Northampton

Thank you Ed. Off.

Sensible advice and very thorough backup as well. The Bootle end looks rather hopeless if it 's 1949. The other I'll either have to try Rootschat or put it on the backburner...

Your best bet is definitely the local papers. If you have a date of the inquest in Bootle someone might be prepared to do a look up. It'd be worth a separate request. I think the Bootle Times is also on film in Crosby library.

Give it a whirl!!

The Bootle date is 13th August 1929 - the day after his death in the family house 10 Roby Street, the day before. His name was James William Allison, aged 17, an apprentice electrician (unemployed). Death attributed to unsound mind.

There is no-one now of that generation in my family so I don't mind posting the details. I may eventually be able to get to Crosby but not in the forseable future.

I hope you don't mind, I've amended the heading of this post in case it catches the eye of anybody who might be able to do a look up, also made the pertinent point in bold.

I might just be in Crosby library on Friday so I'll see what I can do

Not promising but if I can squeeze it in between the helping at the group in Bootle and visiting in Netherton I will!! If not it'll be 2 weeks later if that's OK.

Mary,
Far from minding I'm just pleased that you have suggested and done it.

Ed. Off. - IF you can- fine but please don't let it divert you or make you harassed. It's just another very small detail ni the overall family tree - though not a happy one.
