Possible German Ancestor

I have a 2 x G Grandmother called Mary Albridge. It's been a job trying to find her people. She married Charles Atkinson in Oldham in 1873. She was supposed to have been born in Grimsby. I've found a Mary Albridge, right age, in Grimsby in 1871 but born in Germany!

Thankfully there was a helpful note with the record. It turns out that the German name Albeck was anglicised to Albridge. Her father Peter is Albridge in 1871 then Albick in 1881 and then Albeck again in 1891!

I've sent off for the marriage certificate to Oldham to find out if the father is called Peter. So I could be adding German to my English, Irish, Manx, Welsh and Scots ancestry!

Mary was definitely born in Germany. The father on the marriage certificate matches and I found her on the 1901 census. Whereas previously she was listed as being born in Grimsby, in 1901 she is listed as being born in Germany but a British subject.

It's fascinating when our ancestry takes an unexpected turn isn't it.

I don't personally have any advice since my own research hasn't taken me in that direction, but rather than copy some links from another site, I do know that Berlin Bob and a few others on the Rootschat Europe Board have collected some good advice and websites which might help you.
