Does anyone have information on this interesting character [to me, anyway] who seems to have been born in Wirral in 1855, attended Cambridge University (c 1876, St John's College), played Rugby Football twice for England in 1877 as a member of the Liverpool club. The Times, on 19 Feb 1880 named him as appointed to be Rector of Heswall, but he is not in the Clergy List dated 1897.
He had a commission as Captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (3rd Battalion, Militia) in 1888, having been a Lieutenant in the Royal Jersey Militia previously. Jersey seems to be a hotbed of Touzels.
Married in London in 1895 and died 1899 (reg'd at Stroud, Glos).
He is thought to have had more links in Liverpool than his membership of the Rugby Club, but what?
Anything from censuses of 1861,71, 91 would help - I have failed with the 1881.

Hello Daggers,
Found 2 possibles in the 1861. One actually in Jersey and the other's in Liverpool but the Head of Household was born in Jersey. In the latter, the young Charles is born in Birkenhead. Looks like your man?
TOUZEL, Charles - Head - Married - 33 - 1828 - Corn And Flour Merchant - St Helier, Jersey
TOUZEL, Jane C - Wife - Married - 33 - 1828 - St Helier, Jersey.
TOUZEL, Charles - Son - 4 - 1857 - St Helier, Jersey.
TOUZEL, Alice - Dtr - 3 - 1858 - St Helier, Jersey.
TOUZEL, Francis G - Son - 1 - 1860 - St Helier, Jersey.
TAILOR, Elizabeth S - Maid - Unmarried - 18 - 1843 - Housemaid - St Helier, Jersey.
Address: 23, Pier Road, St Helier.
RG number: RG09 Piece: 4394 Folio: 28 Page: 16
TOUZEL, Charles - Head - Married - 48 - 1813 - Marine Surveyor - Jersey.
TOUZEL, Mary - Wife - Married - 44 - 1817 - Woolton, Lancashire.
TOUZEL, Mary E - Dtr - 8 - 1853 - Scholar - Jersey.
TOUZEL, Charles J - Son - 5 - 1856 - Scholar - Birkenhead, Cheshire.
ROBERTS, Jane - Servant - Unmarried - 36 - 1825 - House Servant - Anglesey, Wales.
JONES, Jane - Servant - Unmarried - 34 - 1827 - House Servant - Anglesey, Wales.
Address: Green Lane, West Derby.
RG number: RG09 Piece: 2735 Folio: 29 Page: 1
Having found that one, I'll give the 1871 a look.
Just did and found 3 abt the right age. 2 were born in Jersey but this one in Cheshire:
TOUZEL, Charles T - Scholar - 15 - 1856 - Cheshire.
RG number: RG10 Piece: 1296 Folio: 66 Page: 13
Address: Wellington College, Sandhurst, Berkshire.
1881, here I come!
Cheers,

Hello again Daggers,
I think this is your man in the 1881. Name mistranscribed:
TOURZEL, Charles J C - Head - Single - 25 - 1856 - B.A.Rector Of Heswall - Birkenhead, Cheshire.
TOURZEL, Charles - Father - Married - 68 - 1813 - Dividends - St Clements, Jersey, Channel Islands.
TOURZEL, Mary - Mother - Married - 64 - 1817 - Dividends - Woolton, Lancashire.
TOURZEL, Mary Edith - Sister - Single - 27 - 1854 - Gronville, Jersey, Channel Islands.
DAVIES, Martha - Servant - Single - 27 - 1854 - Waitress Servant - Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
WRIGHT, Alice Ann - Servant - Single - 15 - 1866 - Housemaid Servant - Lpool, Lancashire.
RG number: RG11 Piece: 3568 Folio: 24 Page: 18
Address: Rectory Heswall, Heswall With Oldfield, Cheshire.
I wonder if the 'Dividends' means income from investments. Excuse the pun, but it looks as though Charles may not have been comfortable 'in vestments'. Or perhaps he became an Army chaplain.
Looked for him in the 1991 without success but I have a feeling that, having an Army commission, he may be overseas. Also searched for his wife, using the 3 possibles from FreeBMD. No hits.
Cheers,
Dickiesam

I am very impressed, but not surprised, and grateful for all this detail, which explains much.
Will digest it in the morning.
Thanks and goodnight.

Good evening ladies,
Re:

I'd say they met in Liverpool. I had a cousin who was a Marine Surveyor and he inspected ships, usually for insurance companies like Lloyds. So it would be normal for him to be based at a large port like Liverpool.

Hi Daggers,
I am wondering about the circumstances of his death because he was only 40 when he died. Do you have the certificate?

Good Tina, that's why I was asking but didn't have enough time to do a better search for the marriage.

I think this is Charles' jnr mother. Now a widow living on own means and her servant is from Heswall.
TOUZEL, Mary - Head - Widow - 74 - 1817 - Living On Own Means - Dri Park (?), Lancashire.
TARBUCK, Alice - Servant - Single - 22 - 1869 - Domestic Servant - Heswall, Cheshire.
RG number: RG12 Piece: 4614 Folio: 17 Page: 12
Address: Little Acton, Park Road, Acton, Denbighshire.
Poor woman seems to have outlived her husband and her two children. Sad. And can anyone come up with a 'translation' of Dri Park'? I'm a little slow in the grey matter department this morning!

I'm finding it hard to catch up with all this splendid stuff. I have no certs, as this is not a link with my family.
'Dividends' does means income from investments, so this would be a well-to-do family.
More when I have digested all this.
Thanks again.

Okies Mary
I thought maybe Violet was living in Ches after Chas death, hence another marriage?
Interesting baby Charles who died, had Helier, Jersey's capital as his middle name.

Judging by Tina's confirmation of Violet being Touzel later, I think the marriage will be
Charles John C Touzel to Violet Eliza B Merritt Q1 1895 Kensington 1a 149.
Also married on the same page was a Sarah Fanny Merritt so possibly a double wedding with sisters?
Dickiesam's find was from the 1891 Wales census, I'm suspecting the servant Alice is related to the family living next door, all Tarbucks from Heswall.
As for Dri Park .... well! the only thing I can think of is that somebody has abbreviated Tox Park? not that it looks like it really though. Suspect that when the enumerator was re-writing the sheets maybe he couldn't read the writing himself ?

Thanks Mary about Violet.
Alice the servant is listed as Loback and Mary as Loerzel in 1891.
Looks like Alice's bro is the gardener living at the lodge.
Interesting they are in Wrexham, with regard to deaths listed.
Mary nee Cliff in census born Woolton. Not sure what 1891 says?
She married quite late in life.
1851 lists her as an annuitant 34 born Woolton living with her brother in Lower Breck Lane, Walton on the Hill.

Well that's just clicked with me - I'd been thinking his middle name of Cliff was a bit of a modern name for those days!!
I'm suspecting dickiesam may have been searching a better transcribed database than us Tina, he may never have found the entry with those spellings.

'Dri Park' could this be related to Dry Grange, once a large house off Allerton Road?
ADDED
Green's Directory, 1870, put Charles Touzel, ship surveyor, at Chapel Street in the Trades section, and Somerset Place for residence, which appears to be off West Derby Road.
Seeing Chas [junior] was at Wellington College in 1871 will help me track him down a bit more, and I shall also look for Crockford's Clerical Directories in the 1880s and 90s for his clerical details, when I get to Wm Brown Street.
Great help all round - what would we do without our keen chasers!.

Hi Mary
Not your fault about Cliff, I should have made it plain.
I've found a Mary Cliff 24 living in Tockie in 1841
There's other people on the cover page but she seems to be the only one in the household. It says widow but has been crossed out.
She always puts Woolton as her birth place, perhaps it was the name of a house Dri Park???
I'll chase up her bro from 1851..

Hi
Her bro Wm bn Lpool 1813c is a Jamaica Merchant in 1851 and a Ship Owner/Merchant in 1861, his wife bn Jamaica.
There must have been some family money in the Cliff's for Mary to be an annuitant at 34 in 1851.
Could her birth Dri? be the name of the house in Woolton?
Tina
ps Wm still alive in 1891 ret'd..
