Hi everyone, I hoping someone can help me, i'm looking for a marriage between Martin Armstrong and Winifred McHale in Lancs not sure of year but their first child born in 1881 so maybe few years preceding that. They came from Ireland (Mayo) but cant find record of marriage here so far. Any information greatly appreciated.

If they had married in England it would have possibly been in Cheshire rather than Lancashire.

Is it the wrong family that I have since there is no error in Elizabeth's age, it would appear that she was born in 1879, not 1881, possibly Q3 1878

As they both came from the same county it would be worth searching the marriage registers in Ireland as it is more feasible that they married before travelling to England.

thanks MaryA, you are right that is the right family, sorry I forgot that Elizabeth was first born I think you may be right they must have married before they moved to England.

With the possibility that Martin and Winifred has married in Ireland I searched the Mayo online marriages here:
http://www.irish-roots.ie/about-ifhf.asp

When the Home site opens there's a list on the right. Click on Resouces to get a list of County Centres.

Mayo is divided into two parts. I looked at North Mayo and searched 1874 to 1881. Found a record for a civil marriage in 1874 for both a Martin Armstrong and a Winifred McHale. Unfortunately, as it is a pay per view site I couldn't get the actual record to see if they had married each other or other people.

Thanks dickiesam, I had checked those marriages but unfortunately they didnt match each other. Im begining to think they never married.

Thanks for all your efforts Tina it is much appreciated. Is the information you've provided of any use regards finding the names of Winifred's Mchales and Martin Armstrong parents. Thats why I wanted to find the marriage. I have their daughter Elizabeth Armstrongs birth cert but its of no help in that regard. Does anyone have any ideas where I'd find that info particularly if there is no marriage(cert).
Unfortunately the census records in ireland were destroyed and so cant check through that avenue.

Hi Sue
We all understand your frustration regarding info from Ire.
You didn't reply regarding Johannes, did little John die?
I believe the kiddies would not have been baptised at St W's without parents being married.
You may need to get in touch with Chester Record Office to see the actual baptism records.
I'm sure other folk here will give you more help than I can.

St Werburgh's Chester is a Catholic Church. It's doubtful if they would have baptised their children there if they were not married.

If it were me I'd be looking at the parish register to see if the priest had made any annotation as to whether he had checked marriage details for the parents. Not a guarantee, but sometimes they did and every little clue is worth trying.

You would be able to order the film of this at your nearest LDS centre, check the familysearch site for the locations.

Thanks to you both you've really been a great help. I didnt realise that about the baptisms I will order them and see if any reference to marriage status. I think John must have died as i don't see any reference to him in any of the census.

Hi just me again. Do I have to go to a LDS history centre to view the material? Sorry not very familiar in this research thing, I found the records on the lds web site but i don't see anyway to order the bapt certs?
Any help?

I don't know where you are Sue, if you can get to Chester Record Office easily then you will be able to view the registers there for free, but if not then find your nearest LDS centre here http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp and you will be able to order the film, I believe it's about £3 to £4 nowadays and they will tell you when they have it available for you.

Is the office still in Dublin where you can search the BMD indexes? I know it has moved to Roscommon? for ordering by post, but the original office may still be there.

When I was there a few years ago you booked the books of indexes for the dates you wanted to check (small fee) and you could search, take a note of the reference and cross check with the name you want, just like us searching the indexes on microfiche.

Then when you had found your match it was another small fee for a photocopy from the register. All done while you wait.

Does Dickiesam know if the Mayo marriages that he searched are complete? Another thought is that the couple may have married shortly before boarding the ship to England, so it might not have taken place in Mayo. Just my reasoning for suggesting the indexes.

Hi Mary, I actually checked the parish register in Mayo for the marriage but nothing doing. I had that thought myself that maybe they married in dublin before they left for england. So I might have to look at some dublin parishes and hope for the best. I will ring one of the LDS centres here and check where the office is now. thanks again for the help.

The office I'm meaning has the complete indexes for Ireland, just as there are those for England, so you wouldn't need to search individual parishes in Dublin.

http://genealogy.about.com/library/vital/blireland.htm - check the indexes yourself to get the reference numbers and then the cost for a photocopy is very cheap.

Also I think you can search these at the Research Office at the Irish Life Centre, but I don't know where this is.
