Last week at BL (Colindale) Newspaper library I found in Ormskirk Observer for March 6 1924 the death announcement of my great uncle George Brown, as follows

On March 2nd at his residence ‘Arthurlie’ Prescot Road Aughton in his 41st year, George the dearly beloved husband of Gertrude Brown, and youngest son of George Brown and the late Eliza Brown)Orritt). At Rest.

Does anyone know if the property still exists. Also has anyone information please on the remaining family, his widow Gertrude (nee Woan), his children George b 1912, Dorothy b 1913 and Stanley b 1923. (I already have details of his parents and their forebears.)

Thanks
Wendy

I did a google but the name of the house isn't showing up. It might be helpful if we knew where along the road it was, Prescot Road in Aughton is quite a long road with a number a properties along one part of it that would be old enough to have been there at that time, but also in another area they would be newer.

If you search the 1911 census for Prescot Road, Aughton Arthurlie was there then and although it might not be your family living in the house at the time, if you were to purchase the image you would also have access to the Enumerator's Description Original Page which "describes the boundaries of the enumeration district, the parishes that lay within the district and the contents of each parish and may provide a good geographical outline of the enumeration district."

I was in the Ormskirk/Aughton area this afternoon so I drove down Prescot Road. As Mary says it's a long road! There are many properties that were probably there at the time you want. However they are all numbered now although some still have visible names.

To track down the one you want without more details will be difficult. Was the last child Stanley born there? If so his birth or baptism might give a number rather than a house name.

Did Dorothy have a second name? There is on lancashirebmd a marriage of a Dorothy Gertrude in 1939. As this is getting rather near the present I suggest you look at it to see if you think it's a possible. The marriage might give more address details.

Thank you for your suggestions, and for driving down Prescot Road..My cousin is going to check 1911 transcript for me on his return from holiday.

Yes, the daughter was called Dorothy Gertrude and I think the marriage of Dorothy Gertrude in 1939 to Ernest LYON ( St. Peter and St. Paul, OrmskirkPrestonCE14/9/228) is very likely to be her as info re death of a Dorothy Gertrude Lyon in 2001 in West Lancs shows her date of birth as 12 Sept 1913 which fits that of Dorothy Gertrude Brown.

Re Stanley, Lancs BMD shows he was born in Aughton but I'm not sure if at 'Arthurlie', tho very probable as it was the year before his father died there.
I have now also found a marriage in 1952 BROWN Stanley LYON Joan West Derby, St. Mary The VirginLiverpool2033WD/11/39 which may be him in view of surname of his bride.

Would the parish records re marriages still be with the churches in view of dates?

Regards
Wendy

The reference for the Parish Registers for St Marys 283 WES go up to 1952, so it would be best to check with the Record Office first, although if you wished to order the certificate you can do so from the LancashireBMD site by clicking the reference number and downloading the partially completed Application Form and sending it by post.
