Info on Armstrong/Reed wedding cert

Hi folks

Just wondering if proof of age was needed when people got wed.

According to her marriage cert (March 1910) my nan, Elizabeth Jane Armstrong, was 21 but her birth date was 29 Dec 1891 which would make her 18.

Could father's names be entered incorrectly on the cert - am having trouble tracing my granddad's (Herbert) father - William Joseph Reed (hairdresser)

Flummoxed & confused (can you be both!!)

Hi Lesley, it's easy to be both when it comes to our hobby.

If Elizabeth claimed she was 21 she wouldn't need parental permission, that's the most likely reason for her change in age.

We also find names incorrectly entered, the possibility is that Herbert didn't know his father's name, he may have been illegitimate so covered up this fact by either inventing a name or using the names of somebody who had become a father figure to him, just to save face.

Please give fuller details from the marriage certificate, his address and witnesses names, anything that might help and I'm sure the crew will help to have a look for you.

Hi Lesley
1911 census has Herbert Reed 24, Elizabeth 20
also an Elsie Reed 12 yrs old.
West Derby Rego.
I hope this helps with Elizabeth's age.

Good work Simone in 1901, Rud

Hi Simone

Thank you soooooooooooo much

Tried all variations of Reed with no joy - would never have guessed in a million years to try Rud.

I've got so much to learn about tracing family members - is there an easy way to search an address

Hi Lesley

I just searched 1891 for Herbert Reed with dad William, :)
no joy, but noticed one with dad Joseph W, so had a look and saw he was a hairdresser :) couldn't find them in 1901, so searched for a Herbert with a dad Joseph, but didn't put any surname in, up came the Rud entry :D

Hi Simone

Jospeh W Reed m Catherine Hothard at Edge Hill, Christ Church 1886

turns out Catherine's name is Stothart/Stothard - think I'm getting the hang of this!!

The GRO Index spells Joseph William's name as REID and he married Catherine STOTHART in March quarter 1886 (8b536) so that narrows down your search.
