Hello good folks been a while since I've been here so hope you're all well.
Thanks to previous help here I've made lots of progress confirming family members.
This leads me to asking if some kind soul minds looking up a marriage for me?
John CANNELL ( sometimes spelt Canel , Connell ) to
Louisa MAKIN Dec quarter1838 at Liverpool Registery Office.
I'm in need of knowing the name of John's father possible occupation and an address, if that information is available for Louisa would be great too.
Many Thanks Cazz
p.s. I'm off to the IOM in September & I know lots of Liverpool family are from there let me know if I can be of service to anyone?

Hi,
I am presuming that you have the GRO reference for the marriage. If you send off for the certificate, it will give you the information you want.

Hi Cazz
As pointed out by Emeltee the marriage cert will provide the info you are looking for and more. The GRO index reference is:
Dec 1838; CANNELL, John James Cain to Makin, Louisa - Liverpool - 20 - 325.
Cheers,

Hi Cazz
When it says Register office or registrar attended, we aren't able to look up the marriage for you at the record office in the way that you can for a church marriage

The only way is order the certificate, sorry

Was wondering if anyone has suggestions as to where Alice
IRWIN would have gone having arrived from Ireland ? Dublin, very pregnant before marrying William
CANNELL ?
Time frame is about 1866 -1868.
Pregnant Alice!

Hi Cazz,
"Where Alice IRWIN would have gone having arrived from Ireland Dublin, very pregnant"
And it's still happening today! From experience in my rellies the phrase "Get thee to a nunnery" springs to mind. Lord help the poor woman! I believe most of the babies born in convents to unwed mothers would have been taken for adoption. Although a close relative like a sister might have taken her in. But I'd put a small bet on the nuns.
Cheers,
Dickiesam
Edit for PS: Just a thought, if William Cannell was the father Alice may have moved in with him prior to the birth.

Ah yes the Irish reponse was a tough one back then.
I gather from family she left Ireland carrying the lord of the manor's child
so looks to have had the child in Liverpool.
I just know she married William and can account for their children.
There's a big gap between the oldest and second child i.e. 9 years so maybe the oldest is that child?
Don't really know how you'd find out?

Hello Caz
I have a Cannell conection via the Isle of Man in my family. Do you think there might be a connection? Mary Ann Cannell born 1864 married John Speakman Williams in 1889. Her father, William Charles Cannell was born in the Isle of Man about 1830.

Hello Barbara I'd been reading your topics with interest as we had same named forebears.
Think it's odds on Cannells from IOM are related even if distantly.
Until I get the mrriage certificate I'll not know who on IOM we're descended from when I do I'll let you know.
I am planning a visit to IOM in September if I can look up anything for you let me know?

Hello Cazz (spelt it right this time!)
I have had a contact from a Cannell who is still in the Isle of Man - related through William Charles junior. He has helped trace some other members of the clan. Isabella married a Louis Braide and had children. I would be interested to see if there are any of their descendants so I may get back to you before September with any info I have. You might be able to trace them. I hope you enjoy your visit. I used to go on holiday as a child and have fond memories of Port Erin and Port St Mary

Hi all
right the aforementioned marriage certificate has arrived and thrown up more questions than answers as per !!
So couple of queries John James Cain Cannell's father is John Cannell, occupation shown as possibly slaters or platers having problems reading the writing.
The Cannells seem to mostly work at the port so not sure about typical occupations there.
Plus one address is very difficult looks something like Cloham Place though the first letter looks the same as the capital O written for October on the certificate so possibly Oloham Place ?
The marriage was at the Register Office, Liverpool 1838 did you have to marry within an area near to where you married?

Hi Cazz
William Charles Cannell, born Isle of Man about 1830 also worked in the shipping trade - he was a ship's carpenter. Hope this is of interest/use to you.

Hi Barbara
I did come across this fella but not had time to work out how he'd be connected with my lot.
Does it say where in IOM he was born?

Hi Cazz
No it doesn't give anything specific. I can tell you a bit about his family. His mother was Mary Watterson who seems to have married Mr Cannell some time after the birth of William and possibly his brother, Thomas, born Isle of Man about 1833. Mary's father was Thomas Watterson, a joiner and William was his apprentice in the 1841 census. They were listed as living in Onchan. They're hard to follow as Mary remarried Joseph/Hugh Lewis and the two sons took the surname Lewis at one point.
Hope this helps
Barbara
