John Hoyle b.Vauxhall 1832

I am searching for birth details of my great-great-grandad John Hoyle who was born in Vauxhall on 17th Sept 1832 (acccording to our family bible). He became a solicitor's clerk and moved to Rossendale in Lancashire where he married a Mary Pickup and my traceable genealogy begins. It is just that genealogy sites don't go back far enough to trace his birth and parentage. One site says he was born in 1833 but our bible says 1832.

Do I have to go to Liverpool to search for records or can I get help online?

Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Do you have John's marriage certificate? If you don't I advise you to get this. You ca order it online from the GRO. If you have it it will give the name of John's father. Armed with this it will be easier hopefully to track down Jphn's christening.

On www.familysearch.org which has many christenings BUT not all there is a possibility John Hoyle son of Giles Hoyle and Elizabeth was christened on 8 October 1832 at St Peter Liverpool. If your John has a father Giles this may well be the one you want. The actual entry on film in Liverpool Record Office will have more details of Giles and Elizabeth such as occupation and abode.

Hope this helps

If by any chance this site was the IGI then check if it was the christening date that was given rather than the birth date which wasn't always included in the Registers.

An entry in the IGI has been submitted for their marriage
20 September 1854 St Nicholas, Newchurch In Rossendale
however, the Register should be checked by you to ensure it's accuracy.

As advised by our Education Officer, the marriage certificate will give you a lot of information such as their age, address and occupations, together with their father's names and occupations. The witnesses might also be family members.

You can order the certificate online at www.gro.gov.uk using the following details
Q3 1854 Haslingden 8e 157

or check the Register - the following details from County Library and Information Service - Haslingden

"St. James' Parish Church registers are deposited at the Lancashire Record Office, Preston, with a microfilm copy at Rawtenstall Library. Microfilms of registers held include those for churches in Crawshawbooth, Newchurch-in-Rossendale, Whitewell Bottom, Musbury, Loveclough, Rawtenstall, Cloughfold, Townsend Fold and Scout Bottom."

To both members who replied to my post. To Ed. Officer - No I haven't got the marriage cert but I am certain that the christening you mention is the correct one, because in our family bible there is mention of a Giles Hoyle born in 1804, and John called one of his sons Giles, presumably after his father. There is also mention of a Betty Nuttall born 1807, and of course, many Elizabeths were called Betty. These 2 names are on each "side" of John's name in the bible, but I couldn't be sure they were his parents as the names are in the form of a list rather than a tree. Therefore I am fairly sure that this info is the correct one. I will now order the cert and try to take further steps to trace Giles and Betty.

To Mary A - I am also sure that the marriage cert is correct because the family lived in Newchurch. As I happen to be churchwarden of St Nicholas Newchurch and we have a heritage weekend next month when the records will be on display I can now have a look!!

May I say thank you to both of you for all your help. You are wonderful!!

The Parish Register entry will give the same details as if you ordered the certificate so that will save you £7, great! and confirm their father's names for you so you'll know how to proceed.

Good luck

Thank you Carole W. Looks like my great-great-grandad had a sister! I was wondering if there were any siblings... :D

To Tina - yes there are a lot of Hoyles in Rossendale. I also found a John Hoyle with parents Luke and Elizabeth but it is the wrong family. Have now found correct parents Giles and Elizabeth with help from other members. Not sure abt the Giles Hoyle age 73 - he may be related.

Thanks again to all of you...
