RUSSIANS IN LIVERPOOL

This is a bit of a long shot!
I have recently been advised that the SOLOMONS in my tree were originally called SALAMANCA and came from Russia.
I have got them as far back as 1841 Ellen Solomon age 20 servant in Rupert Street. Her father was Owen Solomon (mariner) who married Ellen Griffiths in Gt Crosshall Street Independent. Ellen Snr came from Carnarvon. (Additional question - was the above church mainly used by the Welsh? I wondered why they would go there and not St Nics?)
The elderly lady who gave this info was adamant that it was correct but its news to me. My Mum used to make a reference to an "Uncle Sol" and said they were Jewish. I wonder whether they decided to use one of their first names as a surname.
Any one any comments and has any one any info on early Russian settlers in LIverpool? Some of the Solomons were living in LLanbeblig so assumed they were all Welsh? Does anyone know if Solomon is a WElsh name?
Cheers
J

Jean,
I found this info on the name Solomon.
http://www.abarim-publications.com/Meaning/Solomon.html
I think the church was a Welsh church, I think it would have been the brides parish church rather than the groom's that they would have married in.

Solom, Solomons, Soloman Salaman and Salomon can all be Jewish Surnames. If you google Jewish Surnames you get lots of sites with lists of Jewish Surnames.
Solom could also be used by a non Jewish religious family as it's a Biblical name.
The use of a first name of Owen (defintely Welsh) would indicate to me that if there was a Jewish connection it was many many years ago.
the other thought I had was that Salamanca is a place in Spain. Could there have been a Spanish sea connection?
You would need to work backwards in Wales to see what else you can dig up.

Great Crosshall St Chapel appears to have been Welsh Baptist apparently there were 2 Welsh chapels in the Street. Again Googling the chapel produced quite a lot of sites about the Welsh in Liverpool.
