Pre 1837

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to post it.
On my father's side I have got back to 1840. What is the best way to go beyond that date and into the 18th century. Does it get harder now?
Most of my research has been on FreeBMD and then applying for the certificates. All of mine have been from Liverpool so far, so have just posted to the Cotton Exchange for the cert.
Thanks,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
You could try the familysearch webite (LDS).
Not a full index of BMD's before 1837, but you may get lucky.

You could also try
Online Parish Clerks
If you don't find a link with these sites the original parish registers may need to be checked, most of them will be available on microfilm at the Liverpool Record Office.
Also check for any Wills - a few hints
here
If you are able to visit the Liverpool Record Office you may be able to see if there are any rent books available, or other church documentation.

Hi Dave
its not fully complete but I've picked up a few loose relatives here when I couldn't find them elsewhere - England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1940 at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1352.
You get this as part of the subscription.

Thanks all,
I've taken your suggestions on board and have been doing some serious swatting over the weekend. I've actually come up with a few new leads as well.

Hi all
I've never come across this site before - apparently its a companion project to FreeBMD. I've been using it all yesterday and have found lots of extra stuff including names of witnesses, fathers and mothers of grooms and brides and there's lots before 1837 which is fantastic.
I'd spent over 2 years (and what must amount to over 100 hours) searching for the maiden names of two Great Grandmothers (X5 and X6) and found them both on this site within minutes.

Good Luck
