Can any one tell me if orphanages had their own census returns. Also does any one know if Sisters of the poor Clare in Everton had an orphanage. Thanks a lot, Betty.

Well they certainly wouldn't have been missed - two ways to check (on Ancestry anyway) is to either choose an appropriate age to search and use the drop down "Relationship to Head" as either pupil/Inmate/Institutional etc. and check each one.

Alternatively go to the list of Counties at the bottom of the search page, and on the sub page of Lancashire, find Everton and check the two districts there, in 1901 there is both North and South Everton. Scroll down the list of districts and you will see the institutions, eg Beacon Lane Orphanage, Girls Industrial School, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Sisters of Notre Dame (I wonder if this could be what you are after), and St Edwards College.

Everton South includes the Industrial School, St Elizabeth's Institute (I believe this was Breckfield Road), St George's Industrial School, St Vincent De Pauls and the West Derby Union.

Obviously I haven't come across this in the Everton census for 1901, nor, using the words Poor Clare/s in the Online Search but you could perhaps give Liverpool Record Office a call and ask since if there was such a place they might be able to advise you if there were any Admissions or Minute Books available.
