If you find the marriage on Free BMD [or similar], click on the page number against the groom's name. The brides' names on that page will appear. The census should show the husband and wife together. So long as there is not more than one of the brides with the same first name on the BMD list, , there is the answer. Worth checking by another method, such as the certificate, anyway.

As Daggers says, the correct partner is often identified by checking the next census, but it doesn't always work out that way.

Obviously the definitive way is by working backwards and so obtain the mother's maiden name from the child's birth certificate.

The most certain way is if the marriage is listed on http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ as these entries have been transcribed from the Parish Registers and are matched up husband and wife.

Hi Shirley
If you have 2 grooms & 2 brides, check them off in Lancs BMD.
Not always there but you may just get lucky.
