I am trying to find out what happened to father's family. I always thought mother was alive when father died in 1915 but have just found out that she died prior to him in 1912. There were four children. 4,5,6 and 2 in 1912. They lived in Cromwell St Toxteth when both deaths were registered and the family are there in the 1911 census. All the information I have is that Dad was sent to Wales to work on a farm when he was 14. Any help appreciated

What happened to father's family?

Hello Marie,
Noticed a slight omission in your post. Some names, for Mum, Dad and the children, would help us help you!
A couple of questions..
How old were the parents when they died? Do I understand that your father was one of the children in the family?
Cheers,

ORPHANAGES C.E. TOXTETH

Hi dickisam,

I did not think names relevant as request just for possible orphanages. Yes they are my father's siblings. Before you ask, this is part of the mystery, he never discussed it either with my mother or us. His mother was 31 died 2/2/1912 father 36 died March 1915 both in Toxteth workhouse Infirmary from TB. Lived at 4 Cromwell St. Second hand information was he was sent to a farm in Wales at 14 and he ran away. My mother told me that bit. I now know he had sisters Nellie born 1906, Elizabeth 1907, him Charles born 1908, brother Richard born 1910. Again secondhand information via my mother Canada was mentioned for girls. I have noticed an Elizabeth Williams born 1907 sent to Canada at 17 in 1923 on the Canadian Homes Website but this is a longshot with such a common name and I do not know how to make enquiries about it. The surname is Williams. My grandfather had quite a few siblings but my dad never mentioned them either. Through Genes reunited I have found someone descended from elder brother of grandfather whose wife registered grandfather's death and although he initially said he would contact his mother, who lives in Spain, I have heard no more. That was April time. I have his e mail but do not like pestering him. I would just like a Liverpool search before going further afield.

Hello Marie,
Thank you for the detailed response. I apparently misunderstood your posted query. Hopefully SKP among the crew on this forum will have knowledge of an orphanage or industrial school etc close to Cromwell Street and the workhouse.

Regarding child migrants to Canada it would be worthwhile looking at this post on another site:
http://forums.icnorthwest.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=100727
There are a couple of URLs for websites you may find useful. If the story about Elizabeth is true, it is quite possible that siblings were sent to Canada with her.

I assume you have your father Charles' marriage certificate? When and where did he marry and what address and occupation did he give on the cert?

Don't want to be pessimistic but if he was sent to a farm as a child labourer I doubt if you will be able to confirm which orphanage sent him there. From personal experience I found that many Liverpool orphanage/industrial school records are either missing or incomplete, even as recent as the 1930s and 40s. But, that said, let's hope for some luck in the search.
Cheers,
Dickiesam

Hi Dickiesam
If you go to Search & put Marie in as the author you will be able to see all the previous posts about her family.
It could save you a lot of time.
Marie has only recently found out that Grannie died in 1912 where she thought she was alive in previous posts.

Hi Dickisam,

I have all the details for my Dad, it is Grandfather and siblings the problem. Dad was married in St John's Knotty Ash in 1936. Grandad was married St Silas in 1903. It is what happened in between that is the problem.

Thanks for help.

Hi Marie,My Grandfather was in a Church of England orphanage in Myrtle Street which I think is Toxteth its Liverpool 7 it was called Boys Girls and Infant Asylums Myrtle Street,I think where it once stood is called Orphan Street.
I had to write to the governors of Salisbury House with a request to search their records and was given a letter which I had to show at the re
cords office to get the files out.
Hope this is of some help to you.

Do you have the address of Salisbury House? It is good that the records are available. Thanks

You may not be able to have access to the papers just yet, unless they bend the rules slightly, since there is a 100 year restriction on them.

This gives a list of what is available at the Record Office and the reference numbers.
