I have just seen some new news on the National Archives website. There will be 7 places where the census can be viewed for free. The nearest to us is Manchester.

Although it's not available in Liverpool - shame - the distribution is fairly well spread throughout and hopefully everybody will be within not too difficult travelling distance.

I should think you'll have to book!!! I have visions of a queue all the way down the M62 and round the M60!

Just to update everyone about the 1911 census being available at Manchester. I had a talk with Paul Webster Manager of Liverpool Record Office and he had no idea about Manchester being chosen to have the 1911 census. He has put it in the hands of Ruth Hobbins and she is going to find out why Liverpool where not given the opportunity to have the 1911 census at Liverpool, what with Liverpool being the 2nd busiest Archives outside of London.

Will keep everyone updated.

My guess would be they picked places by their geographically location to try and spread 7 sites round the country.

Census Records
1911 Census

Manchester Archives and Local Studies now has free access to the 1911 census for England and Wales. We are one of seven archives and libraries in the country that has been given free access by the National Archives. Please note:

•The 1911 census is available on 2 computers in Manchester Archives and Local Studies, Central Library.
•Sessions of 40 minutes are allocated on a first come first served basis
•We do not take advance bookings. The Greater Manchester County Record Office on Marshall Street also has free access to the 1911 census on 2 computers. They are able to take advance bookings.
•There is a limit of one session per customer per day.
•It is possible to print from the census (20p per sheet - Black and White).
•Images can also be saved to USB memory sticks. 2GB memory sticks are sold in Central Library (Networks Centre) for £9.95.

It's fair enough I suppose if they are only going to grant a certain number of locations around the country, if only one place in the north west then Manchester is more central. It just makes me wonder if, by the time we've spent on petrol and parking, would it be just as cheap to pay for the images at home!
