Hi Diane
Welcome aboard.
I would suggest you order the marriage certificate, you will then get an occupation for William which will help in census search.
Where was her hubby born in 1911 census and the kiddies?
Was Carol's find of a Yorkshire wedding the correct one?
Ellen could be Helen/Helena/Elen/Nellie on her birth rego.
All the best
Tina

Hi Diane
Found this birth:
Mar 1881 - Robertson, Ellen Hamilton - W. Derby - 8b - 655.
If you haven't checked this one already and send for the birth cert, you should use the GRO Reference Checking facility and specify William as the father. That way, if the father isn't Wm you will only be charged £4 for the search instead of £7 and getting the wrong cert.
Cheers,
Dickiesam

Thanks for all your replies. I have got Ellens Marriage certificate her fathers name is down as William, deceased and he was an upholsterer. Her birth year was 1884. I have been told that her father William was born in Scotland, as a teenager she came to Sheffield and went into service this is where she met her Husband James William Hughes who was born in Sheffield and that is where they stayed. It was on the 1911 census that I got the information of her birth place being Liverpool. Ellen died in the late 1960s and I did visit her quite often when I was younger. She seems very elusive I can't find a birth or a census entry other than the 1911. Thanks again to all who replied.

Hello Diane,
If her father was a Scot, it's possible Ellen was born in Scotland. On Scotland's people website there are (between 1882 and 1885) 9 Ellen Robertsons born. 6 of these have a second forename. Might be worth checking the birth details of the 3 plain Ellens? If you haven't been there before the site is at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ It's free to search site but you pay to view actual records.
Since there is no sign of her in the England/Wales 1891 census I had a look at the Scotland 1891 census and there are 16 ERs aged between 6 and 8 years. Worth checking for a father William, upholsterer?
Cheers,
Dickiesam

Hi Dickiesam,
Thanks for reply I will check these out on Scotlands People. You could be right about being born in Scotland, and still being there for the 1891 census. Just giving Liverpool a try as someone put her down on the 1911 census as being born in Liverpool.
