I looked at Daisycakes' post where it seemed to be possible to find out other members of the household. I followed Mary's instructions but couldn't see any other members, just the original. Am I being thick or do you have to have bought credits first?

No the method works on the index only, it could be that the person you are looking at was living alone. Please give the full details from the index and we can give it a try.

How much of the reference have you entered? do you already have the spreadsheet from which to glean the other parts of the ref?

The family I was looking for is my grandfather's.
He was Robert H Williams, born Liverpool 1894. His mother was Emily Williams, born Liverpool 1865 and his father was Robert Williams, born Liverpool 1858. As far as I know they lived in Alderson street. There was a sister but I don't know her date of birth. The census reference is RD455. That's as much as I have. I entered the info into the advanced search but no luck. I'd be very grateful if you could find them.

You have to have a starting person that you have found on the index to work from, I don't see a Robert H Williams born in 1894.

Again I tried with Emily and within a three year span of that date there was an Emily and a Mary Emily. Emily is at reference RD455 SD11 ED19 but there is nobody with her with the names you gave.

As you have their address have you not tried with that?

Enter the RD455 in the reference and then put Alderson into the Residential Place and Williams into the surname box.

A list is produced including a Robert H but the birth year is 1895, not 1894 as the one you found, there is an Emily but 1874 not the date you found and an older Robert born 1866 not the date you gave.

Leave the reference and Alderson in place and enter Emily Williams in the "Other names in household" and I believe you will find that this may be your family, regardless of the dates of birth being different to those you found.

Thank you Mary, I'll give it a try. I'm sure you're right about the dates.

Can someone point me towards the post with the search tips on, please?

I'm new to the 1911 Census and haven't bought any credits yet.

Is it possible to access the full 1911 Census at my local library (Lancashire)?

I've just found a relative on the index:
HOUSEHOLD SUTTON WILLIAM DALINGTON M 1880 31 Preston Lancashire

I'm not sure what to do next to find out more.

Any tips?

Thanks,

Ken

Hi bring up Wm again in 1911
click on search again
Keep surname delete age
Keep Preston
then put William Dalington into other persons first names
click seach
It brings up
Christopher 1854, Christopher 1894, Emma 1888, Sarah 1852, Thomas 1909.
To get more info you will have to pay 10 credits.

I thought I'd posted this link somewhere, but I can't find it

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news ... p=nf-37818

So if you are in Liverpool the nearest will be Manchester I think.

This is worth looking at if you intend to do much searching of the free index.
