Hi folks,

I am having difficulty in finding Susan Garrett's origins. I have her death certificate dated 7th March 1866, Salop St., Kirkdale, aged 91 years, making her date of birth c 1775, she was born Warrington according to the census.

I have found her 1841/1851/1861 living Scotland Rd., Liverpool with her gt.nephew Robert Henry Whitford, she was a spinster.

Nothing appears for her on I.G.I.

Any ideas?

Hi Glenys,

I have been doing some digging (not in the garden haha).

I have found a christening on the IGI for Robert Henry Whitford in 1814 Liverpool St Peter, parents Richard and Charlotte,

I have found Robert's marriage on the lancs opc site, St Nicholas Liverpool 1834.

I am just wondering which side of the family Susan Garrett was from?

Here's the marriage anyway.

Marriage: 6 Oct 1834 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Robert Henry Whitford - Printer of Liverpool
Ellen Brown - Spinster of Liverpool
Married by Banns by: Oliver Ormerod Curate
Register: Marriages 1834, Page 14, Entry 1121

The most likely church for Warrington would be St Elphins. Their baptisms from 1781 are on the www.lan-opc.org.uk website.

I looked to see if there are other Garrett baptisms around the 1780s with no success. A full search of their site also produced no Susan Garretts.
I think you need to look at a map of the parishes around Warrington and then do a search in possible church registers. Those registers of churches to the west you are likely to be able to see on film in Liverpool record Offices. For those around Warrington area which are now in Cheshire you may need to either visit Cheshire Record Office at chester or Warrington itself.

It might also be worth researching Robert's origins to see if you can find Susan that way.

Hi Jan and Ed Officer,

Robert Henry Whitford was my gt.gt.grandpa; his parents were Richard and Charlotte Whitford ne Jones, who married 1812, Bradden, Isle of Man.
Charlotte born 1792, was from Isle of Man; Richard, born c 1785, was rumoured to have been from Cornwall - possibly a pirate :o

I can't find any census or deaths for Richard and Charlotte by the way.

Robert married again in 1866, Everton, to Catherine Ellen Stewart - it's from this marriage that I am descended.

On 1861 census Catherine was a servant to Robert and his first wife Ellen .........

There was a 29 year age difference between Robert and Catherine !!!

Susan is a mystery I would like to solve.

If I've understood this right for Robert Henry Whitford to be described as the great nephew of Susan Garrett, she (Susan) should be the sister of Robert Henry's grandparents. So you are looking at the need to investigate further Richard Garrett born about 1785 possibly Cornwall and Charlotte Jones born about 1792 in the Isle of Man.

I think I'd start with Charlotte Jones on the Isle of Man and see if there are any Garretts in her background.

Of course the other possibility is that it's via his father's second marriage to Ellen Stewart!!! Or even via his wife's family!!
