I suppose it's time I asked a question from you clever lot.

Trying to find any info on Thomas JOLLIFFE a toll collector in Byrom Street. I know he was living in Dale Street in the early 1800s then in Byrom Street and disappeared in 1814 from Gores but that's it.

Any ideas where next ?

TA and enjoy the sunshine.

Liverpool Mercury
Births, Deaths, Marriages and Obituaries
Friday, February 2, 1827; Issue 819
DIED
On Monday last ......
Same day, at Chester, Margaret, wife of Mr Thomas Jolliff late Toll Collector of this town.
-----------------------------------------------

My interpretation would be that "of this town" refers to Liverpool rather than Chester.

Hi Doe,
James was Thomas' son.

Mary how come I couldn't find that death......... grrrrrr.

But thanks a million, Thomas must have died before Margaret as the obituary says "late TJ"

TA to both of you

Yep I would think so, at least it gives you a time frame but not necessarily a place. They could both have moved to Chester after Thomas finished working as Toll Collector in Liverpool.

Seems like you'll have to spread your net a bit wider.

PS Newspaper searches are a pain, they find what you don't want mostly, but to find what you do want you have to try all spellings, would you believe there are mentions of Jolliffe, Jolliff, Joliffe, Jollife, Joliff, Jollif etc.

Well the date has to be the clincher on that one since Thomas's occupation would have put us off! Hope you find a grave Peter.

Hi Tina,
would you believe it Thomas was a brazier before he became a toll collector.

Many thanks for your help. It's off to Chester ASAP

Good news Peter, I nearly didn't bother to post the info because of his occupation...

I know...never assume.

Cheers

For what it's worth I'd say that Thomas Jolliffe was still alive when Margaret was buried in Chester in 1827.
The Cheshire Parish Register project in fact describes her as the wife of Thomas Jolliffe, not his widow.
And the Liverpool Mercury obituary describes Thomas as late Toll Collector of this town, not the late Thomas Jolliffe.
Had Margaret been widowed then in the terminology of the day she'd probably have been described as 'relict' of Thomas Jolliffe.
