This is because the LancashireBMD site is transcribed from the Parish Registers, that reference relates to the parish register of the church where the marriage took place.
Findmypast, Ancestry or FreeBMD all have the GRO indexes transcribed (at least partially) which bear no relationship to the parish register.
Your options are -
1. Search the GRO indexes (FMP, Ancestry, FreeBMD or a library or Record Office) for the year of the marriage, find the two people involved and take a note of the reference number, probably "West Derby 8b and the page number" and order the certificate from the
GRO
2. On the LancashireBMD site, find your marriage, click on the reference number, when it takes you to the summary page with your list on it, click the reference again and it will produce an application form for you to print off and send in the post together with your cheque - from the Liverpool Register Office it is often longer than the GRO delivery.
3. If indeed the marriage did take place in a church, and the LancashireBMD site gives the church's name, then post a look up request on this site and if somebody has time when they are going to research for themselves they might look it up for you.
Might I suggest you read the suggestions made here

I will be going to the Records Office on Tuesday, can you give me the name of the married couple, and the year of marriage?
Also, I'm not entirely clear on your query, do you want me to look up the name of the Church, and it's location?
Sorry! hope I've got that right.

Good on you for getting there on the day of the Help Desk, I hope they can point you in the right direction.
Kathleen will have the names of the bride and groom and the year and church from
www.Lancashirebmd.org.uk - if this information is cross referenced with the GRO reference it will narrow the timespan down to which quarter in the year the ceremony took place.
If she posts those details that she has a look up in the parish register will provide the same information as she would get if she ordered the marriage certificate ie - their ages, addresses and occupations, their father's names and occupations and the names of the witnesses.

Okey Dokey,
As you know MaryA, I'm not too familiar with said Records Office! So, I just go in an quote the number given in Kathleen's post, and the staff at the office will give me all the details that would be contained on a marriage certificate?
Did I get that right?

Ooops, first of all I read your reply and jumped to the same conclusion as you did that the request was for a marriage look up. In this case the post is headed "Birth". In my earlier post I referred Kathleen to a few notes I put together about what is available at the Record Office - baptisms and burials are available, births and deaths are not.
In this instance, unless Kathleen is aware of which church the baptism took place then you won't be able to assist her.
When you go to the Help Desk just tell the good people there that it's your first visit and they will show you how to go about finding the details that you want. First you will find the file listing the registers for the church that you want, this will give you the reference for the film. They will then show you where the films are and how to work the microfilm machine, then you will be on your way.
You may prefer to phone and book a machine, if you do this it will cost 50p, although you can take a chance on availability and there is then no charge.

MaryA,
Thanks for the advice. I will be going with a classmate from my family history class, as she goes to the records office all the time, and I'm a big scaredy cat!
